What is a tie-neck kurta? Bows, ties and necklines
What is a tie neck kurta? A neck band with long ends tied in a bow or knot. The soft fabrics it needs, the base necklines and how it sits with a dupatta or hijab.
InspirationWhat makes a neck a tie neck
A tie-neck kurta has a narrow band of fabric stitched along the neckline whose ends are left long, so they can be tied at the front in a bow, a loose knot or left hanging. When tied in a large bow it is often called a bow collar. The idea comes from tie-neck blouses and translates easily to a kurta or kameez.
The tie is usually cut as one long strip that forms both the band round the neck and the hanging ends. It can be made in the same fabric as the kurta or in a contrast.
Necklines that sit under a tie
The tie needs a small opening or slit beneath it so the bow has somewhere to sit and the kurta goes over the head. Common pairings:
- Round neck with a slit: the most common base. The bow sits at the top of the slit; the round neck with slit page shows the shape on its own.
- Small V: the ends tie at the point of the V, giving a slightly more open look.
- Band at a high neck: the tie sits at the base of the throat, the most covered version.
- Side tie: the knot sits off-centre near one collarbone, which looks relaxed and avoids a bulky bow under the chin.
The fabric makes or breaks the bow
A tie only drapes well in soft, fluid fabric. Chiffon, georgette, crepe, silk, viscose and fine voile all knot easily and fall in soft loops. Lawn works for a smaller, neater bow. Crisp fabrics such as cambric, khaddar or linen make a rigid bow that stands out like a parcel ribbon, so with those fabrics a shorter tie or a simple knot looks better.
A tie cut on the bias, diagonally across the weave, drapes more softly than one cut straight. If your kurta fabric is firm, a contrasting tie in a softer fabric is a neat solution. Ask for either in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design.
With a dupatta or a hijab
A bow adds volume right at the neck, which affects how you drape whatever goes over it. With a dupatta, the cleanest choice is to wear it over one shoulder or loosely at the back, leaving the bow visible; the dupatta styling guide has more on matching drape to neckline. With a hijab, a large bow can push the fabric forward, so a smaller knot, a side tie or long ends left untied tends to sit more comfortably underneath.
Asking for a tie neck
Choose the base neckline closest to your idea on the form and add a note or photo asking for a tie, with the length of the ends and whether you want a bow or a knot. The collar styles guide covers other neck finishes. Brief us through Send Your Design and request a quote; the details are agreed in writing before cutting.
Common questions
Does a tie-neck kurta need ironing every time?
The ties usually need a quick press to keep the bow neat, especially in crepe or silk. A softer tie in georgette or viscose recovers more easily after washing.
Can the tie be removable?
It can be made as a separate scarf that threads through loops at the neck. Mention it in your brief so the loops are planned in.
Is a tie neck suitable for work?
Yes. A tie neck on a plain straight kurta in a solid colour is a classic office look, much like a tie-neck blouse.
