What to wear on a dinner date
A modest date night outfit for a dinner date: one statement detail, a shaped but covered silhouette and a fabric that looks rich in low restaurant light.
InspirationThe answer in two lines
For a modest date night, choose a covered outfit with some shape to it, such as a co-ord, a maxi dress or a long kameez with slim trousers, and give it one detail that stands out. Pick a deeper colour or a fabric with gentle sheen, because restaurant lighting is low and warm.
A dinner for two is not a party
At a party you are seen across a room by many people. At dinner you are seen across a small table by one person, mostly from the waist up and from close by. That changes the priorities: heavy embroidery and a dramatic dupatta look out of scale, while the neckline, the sleeves, the fabric and how comfortable you are matter far more.
If you are going to a family dinner rather than a date, our guide to dawat and dinner-party outfits is the better fit.
Shaped but covered: four outlines that work
Covered does not have to mean shapeless. Each of these gives a clear outline without showing more than you want:
- A co-ord: a long tunic and matching straight trousers in one colour, which looks deliberate and polished.
- A maxi dress: a tiered skirt moves well and sits comfortably at a table. Our tiered maxi dress is one example, in chiffon, made to measure or in standard sizes.
- A shirt dress over trousers: a belted shirt dress reads smart without trying too hard.
- A long kameez with cigarette trousers: an A-line or straight kameez to the calf, shaped at the waist with darts or panels rather than tightness.
Choose one detail and let it lead
One strong point looks confident; five compete. Pick the one you like most:
- Sleeves: bell sleeves or sleeves with a sheer organza panel.
- Neckline: a sweetheart or square neck, or delicate embroidery around a plain round neck.
- Colour: emerald, wine, navy or a deep rose, in a single shade from top to toe.
- Texture: velvet in winter, a silk-look fabric or a fine jacquard weave.
Fabric for low, warm light
Candles and dim bulbs flatten pale pastels and make some whites look yellow, while deep colours turn richer. A little sheen catches the light nicely, but full satin can look shiny in phone photos taken with a flash. In colder months, velvet is made for exactly this kind of evening.
Comfort counts too. You will be sitting for a couple of hours and eating, so ask for a little more ease at the waist and keep the dress or kameez length clear of the chair legs. Our guide to ease explains how much room to leave.
Ordering a date-night outfit
When you request a quote, tell us the shape, the one detail you want to lead with and the season, and send a photo if you have one. Our custom stitching service explains how lengths, sleeves and necklines are chosen. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, plus shipping, so order well before an anniversary.
Common questions
Should I wear a dupatta on a dinner date?
It is up to you. A light stole or a small dupatta over one shoulder is easier at a table than a large one, and it will not trail into the food.
Is a first date different from an anniversary dinner?
A first date usually calls for something simple and comfortable. An anniversary at a smarter restaurant is a good excuse for velvet, a richer colour or a little more embroidery.
Flats or heels with a maxi dress?
Either works, but decide before you measure, because the length to the floor depends on the shoes you will wear.
