What to wear to a formal event when pregnant

What to wear to a formal event when pregnant: dressy shapes that leave room for the bump on the day, from high waist seams to wrap fronts, and what to ask for.

Dress for the bump you will have on the day

For a formal event during pregnancy, choose a shape that releases from just under the bust, such as an empire-line kameez, an A-line or flared frock, a wrap front or a gathered maxi dress, and put the formality into the fabric and the embroidery instead of a close fit. Most importantly, plan for your shape on the date of the event, not on the day you order.

Our articles on maternity kurtas and measuring for a pregnancy-friendly outfit cover everyday wear and the tape measure. This one is about dressing up.

Formal shapes that make room

These cuts look dressed up on their own and leave the front free to grow:

  • Empire-line kameez: a seam just under the bust, with the rest falling in panels or gathers. It shows the narrowest part of you and skims the rest.
  • A-line or kalidar frock: flared panels from the shoulder or the bust give plenty of room, and a floor-length version looks properly formal. See the A-line kameez and kalidar pages.
  • Wrap or angrakha front: the overlap and ties let the front loosen as you grow, and the diagonal line is flattering.
  • Gathered maxi dress: a high waist seam with a full skirt, in chiffon or georgette over a soft lining.
  • Trousers: a wide-leg or palazzo trouser with a soft elastic or drawstring waist that can sit below the bump. Fitted churidar is the least forgiving option.

Why the front hem needs extra length

A growing bump lifts the front of anything that hangs from the shoulders, so a kameez that is level when you order can rise at the front by the event and dip at the back. Dressmakers deal with this by adding length to the centre front. Ask for it in your quote and tell us how far along you will be on the day; we confirm the allowance in writing before cutting.

Ease matters too. Ask for extra room through the bust and under the arms, and for ties, a drawstring or side panels where they help. Sleeves can stay close, since arms change much less than the front.

Fabric and embroidery for a long evening

A wedding or a formal dinner can mean hours of sitting, standing and walking. Light fabrics with drape, such as chiffon or georgette over a cotton or silk lining, look dressy without weight. Our chiffon, georgette and organza comparison explains the differences. Heavy velvet or a stiff jacquard looks lovely but carries a lot of weight on the shoulders.

Put the embroidery near the face: neckline, sleeves and dupatta border. Dense work across the waist adds stiffness exactly where you want give.

What to put in your quote

Timing needs care. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping is added, but ordering months ahead means guessing your shape. Many people order a few weeks before the event and choose a cut with ties so the guess matters less.

  • The date of the event and how many weeks pregnant you will be
  • The shape: empire line, A-line, wrap or maxi dress
  • Extra length at the centre front, and ease at the bust
  • Waist style for the trousers, if any
  • Embroidery level: delicate or detailed suits most formal events
  • Length: ankle length is easier than a hem that touches the floor

Common questions

Will I be able to wear the outfit after the baby arrives?

Shapes with ties, wrap fronts or a gathered waist often go on working as loose dressy outfits afterwards. A very full empire-line cut can look roomy once the bump has gone, so choose ties if you want a longer life from it.

Should I choose a dress or a shalwar kameez?

Either works. A maxi dress is one piece and quick to put on, while a kameez with wide trousers gives more freedom to sit cross-legged or on low seating. Pick the one you would reach for if you were not pregnant.

What if the event falls after the birth?

Say so in your enquiry. A front opening that suits feeding, such as a hidden zip or a wrap front, can be planned into a formal outfit.
