What to wear to a picnic: easy kurta outfits

What to wear to a picnic: a knee-length cotton kurta with straight trousers in a print that hides grass marks, cut to stay modest when you sit, kneel and run.

A kurta that works on the ground

For a picnic, wear a knee-length cotton kurta with side slits over straight or shalwar trousers, in a mid tone or a busy print, with flat shoes and a dupatta or scarf you can tie out of the way. It lets you sit on a mat, kneel to unpack food and chase a runaway ball without worrying about grass stains or a kameez riding up.

Picnics look relaxed, but they ask a lot of clothes: sitting on uneven ground, bending, carrying, wind and changing weather.

Sitting, kneeling and getting up again

The length of the kurta matters most. Too long and it bunches under you when you sit cross-legged; too short and it rides up when you lean forward. Knee length usually covers your lap neatly when you sit. Side slits to the hip let the front and back fall separately, so nothing pulls.

For trousers, these behave best on the ground:

  • Straight trousers: neat, easy to brush off and fine with trainers; the straight trouser page shows the cut.
  • Shalwar: roomy for sitting cross-legged and cool in summer.
  • Cigarette pants: smart, but choose a little ease at the knee for kneeling.
  • Palazzos: comfortable, though wide legs catch the wind and drag across wet grass.

Colours and prints for grass and food

White trousers and pale kurtas show every grass mark, drip of chutney and muddy handprint. Mid tones such as olive, teal, rust and indigo, or small all-over prints, hide them well. A plain kurta in a mid tone with printed trousers is another way round it.

If something lands on you anyway, our guide to removing common stains explains what to do at home.

Fabric, sleeves and the weather

Lawn and cambric are cool and washable. Linen is cool too, though it creases when you sit for long. Elbow or three-quarter sleeves keep the sun off your arms without getting in the food.

A light dupatta can be tied crossways, knotted at the hip or swapped for a scarf when you are running after children. Bring a cardigan or shawl for when the sun goes in, and a sun hat for open parks.

A picnic set made to measure

A two-piece cotton set is ideal: no embroidery, or delicate work at the neckline, with pockets for a phone and keys. Ask for the kameez length, slit height, sleeve length and trouser style in your quote request, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design. With Fabric + Stitching we supply the cotton.

Making takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment, plus shipping time. More relaxed ideas are on our weekend and gatherings page.

Common questions

Can I wear a dress to a picnic?

Yes, if it is roomy enough to sit in. A maxi dress with a full skirt can be tucked under your knees, but a short or narrow dress makes sitting on a mat awkward, and wind can be a nuisance.

What shoes are best for a picnic?

Flat sandals or trainers that cope with grass and uneven paths. Heels sink into soft ground.

Is denim a good idea?

Jeans are hard-wearing, but they are warm on a hot day and stiff when you sit cross-legged for long. Cotton trousers are usually more comfortable.
