What to wear to a qawwali night or mehfil

Qawwali night outfit ideas: richer colour and texture than a dholki, less embroidery than a mehndi, and trousers and lengths that are easy to sit in for hours.

Pitch it between a dholki and a mehndi

For a qawwali night, wear something a step dressier than you would for a dholki and a step quieter than a mehndi: a rich colour or a textured fabric, light to moderate embroidery, and a cut you can sit in comfortably for several hours, often on the floor.

The same thinking suits a mehfil or a mushaira, though a poetry evening in chairs is usually a little more formal and a lot quieter than a qawwali that runs late into the night.

What kind of evening it is

A qawwali night is built around the music. Guests often sit on white floor sheets or cushions in a hall, a courtyard or a garden, and the performance can go on for hours, sometimes past midnight. People sway, clap and occasionally get up, but mostly they sit.

That has three consequences for what you wear. The outfit has to work sitting cross-legged. It has to stay comfortable as the evening cools. And because the lighting is often warm and low, with a stage lit more brightly than the audience, deeper colours and texture show up better than fine pastel detail.

Colour, texture and embroidery

Jewel tones and earthy shades feel right: maroon, mustard, emerald, deep teal, rust and ink blue. White and ivory with coloured thread work are also popular at some evenings, and if the host has set a colour theme, follow it.

Texture does a lot of the work that embroidery does at a wedding. In cooler months, khaddar or karandi has a handsome, slightly rough surface, while a silk-look or jacquard fabric carries a little sheen in summer. Keep the embroidery at a delicate or detailed level, around the neckline, sleeves and hem, rather than a heavy statement piece. Stiff or scratchy work is unpleasant when you are sitting close to the people next to you for hours.

Built for sitting on the floor

This is where a qawwali outfit differs most from other party wear. A few choices make the evening far easier:

  • Roomy trousers: a shalwar or wide-leg trousers let you sit cross-legged. Churidar and close cigarette pants pull tight at the knee.
  • Side slits: a kameez with slits at the sides sits flat around you instead of riding up.
  • Knee or calf length: a floor-length frock ends up underneath you and creases badly.
  • A soft dupatta: cotton, lawn or soft silk rather than stiff organza, which crushes and slides.
  • A shawl for later: courtyards and halls cool down after dark, and a shawl doubles as a lap cover.

Asking for a qawwali-night outfit

When you request a quote, mention that the outfit is for a long evening seated on the floor. Choose a calf or knee length, shalwar or wide-leg trousers, and a delicate or detailed embroidery level, and tell us the season so we can suggest a fabric. With Fabric + Stitching we supply the fabric; we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. For more ideas on long seated events, see our article on comfortable outfits for long gatherings.

Making takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full, plus shipping time, so allow for both before the date.

Common questions

Is black acceptable at a qawwali night?

Generally yes, especially for an evening event. Coloured or tonal embroidery keeps it festive, and you can check with the host if it is a family occasion.

Will I need to take my shoes off?

At many floor-seated evenings, shoes are left at the edge of the sheets. Choose shoes that slip off easily, and in winter wear socks that look neat.

Do I need a dupatta?

Customs vary between families and venues. Bringing a light dupatta or shawl means you are ready either way.
