What to wear to an engagement party as a guest

What to wear to an engagement party as a guest: a mangni sits between a dawat and a wedding event, so pick a dressy suit with light to medium embroidery.

One step above a dawat

Dress for a mangni one step above a dinner invitation and one step below the main wedding events: a dressy shalwar kameez, a long kameez with wide trousers or an embroidered co-ord, with delicate to detailed embroidery and a cheerful colour. Close family can go a notch further; friends and colleagues can stay lighter.

If you have a dawat outfit you love and a wedding outfit you are saving, the engagement outfit sits neatly between the two.

Read the kind of engagement first

Engagements vary more than any other family event. Some are a small exchange of rings in the living room with tea and mithai; others are a hall booking with a stage, a photographer and two hundred guests. The invitation usually tells you which:

  • A message from the family, at home, in the afternoon: a smart kurta set or a lightly embroidered suit is right.
  • A printed card, a restaurant or hall, in the evening: treat it like a smaller wedding event, with a dressier fabric and a fuller dupatta.
  • A combined engagement and nikkah: dress as you would for a nikkah, a little more modestly and formally.
  • A Western-style engagement party: a cocktail or smart dinner dress code applies, and a kurta set or a dressy co-ord fits in well.

Close family or friend

How close you are to the couple decides how far to go. The families of the couple are often in photographs all evening, so their outfits are planned; friends are there to celebrate, not to compete.

  • Mothers and sisters of the couple: detailed or statement embroidery, a fuller silhouette and sometimes coordinated colours. Our guide to coordinated outfits for sisters helps here.
  • Aunts and cousins: detailed embroidery and a festive colour.
  • Friends and colleagues: delicate embroidery, a pretty fabric and a nicer dupatta than usual.

Colours and fabric

Pastels and soft prints suit an afternoon at home; jewel colours such as emerald, teal and deep pink suit an evening in a hall. If the family have shared what the bride-to-be is wearing, choose something clearly different.

Chiffon, cotton silk and jacquard all work. A chiffon dupatta over a cotton silk kameez looks dressy without the weight of a wedding outfit, and you will wear it again at dinners and Eid.

Expect to stand for the ring exchange, sit on sofas, eat from a plate on your lap and pose for group photos. Pin the dupatta if it slips, and wear shoes you can stand in.

Asking for an engagement outfit

Engagements are sometimes announced at short notice, and we do not take rush orders. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is added, so start as soon as you hear the date.

In your quote request, give the event, the colour (a photo is clearer than a name), the fabric you prefer, the embroidery level and the length. You can add embroidery, lace or borders to an outfit we stitch; our custom embroidery page explains the levels, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Common questions

Can I wear my engagement outfit again at the wedding?

Yes, especially to a dholki or mehndi. If you want it to work at both, choose a colour that is not tied to one event and keep the embroidery at a detailed level, not statement.

Is a co-ord set formal enough for a mangni?

For a home gathering or a restaurant, an embroidered co-ord in a dressy fabric is fine. For a hall event, add a dupatta or choose a longer kameez.

Should I cover my head at the ring ceremony?

That depends on the family. Some engagements include prayers or an elders’ blessing where women cover their heads, so a dupatta on your shoulder is handy to have.
