What to wear to the beach if you dress modestly

What to wear to the beach if you dress modestly: fabric that does not turn sheer when damp, hems clear of wet sand, a scarf that holds in wind and darker prints.

The short answer

For a modest beach day, choose a loose kaftan or long tunic with cropped wide trousers in a dense, opaque fabric, keep hems at ankle height or above so they stay out of wet sand, wear a scarf that grips in the wind, and pick darker colours or prints that will not show through if they get damp. This is about clothes for the sand, not for swimming.

Packing for a whole holiday is covered in our guide to modest holiday outfits. This article sticks to the beach itself.

The damp test

The biggest surprise at the beach is how sheer some fabrics become when wet. Spray from the waves, a splash from a child or sitting on damp sand is enough. Pale, thin cottons such as white lawn are the usual culprits.

Before you go, wet a corner of the fabric and hold it up to the light. If you can see your hand clearly through it, wear it over a lining or an inner layer, or leave it for the promenade café. Denser weaves, mid and dark colours and busy prints all stay modest when damp.

Shapes that work on sand

Sand, wind and water all reward the same thing: loose but not trailing.

  • A kaftan or kaftan-style kameez: cool, roomy and easy to sit in. Our article on kaftan-style kameez explains the shape.
  • Cropped wide trousers: ankle or just above, so the hems stay dry. Palazzos are cool but catch the wind, so pick a heavier fabric.
  • Calf-length hems: a floor-length abaya or maxi picks up wet sand and grows heavy. Calf or ankle length is easier.
  • Lightweight layers: a thin open shirt or long kimono over a tunic gives sun cover without heat.

Fabric, colour and the scarf

Linen and linen blends are cool and dry quickly, though they crease; cotton voile is light but needs a lining. Mid and dark prints hide damp patches, sand and sunscreen marks far better than plain white.

Sea breezes are constant, so a chiffon scarf on its own may not stay put. A jersey or cotton scarf with an underscarf, or a pin at the shoulder, holds better. Our tips for windy days apply here too.

Ordering a beach set

A matching kaftan and cropped trousers is simple to make to measure. When you start a quote, tell us it is for the beach, choose the length and trouser style, and ask for an opaque fabric or a lining. Our custom stitching service explains the choices. Making takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full, plus shipping time, so order before you book the flights.

Common questions

Can I swim in a kaftan?

Ordinary woven fabric becomes heavy and clings when soaked, which makes swimming hard. Clothes for the sand and clothes for the water are best kept separate.

Is linen a good beach fabric?

Yes for heat and quick drying, as long as you do not mind creases. A mid or dark colour keeps it from turning see-through when damp.

What shoes go with a modest beach outfit?

Flat sandals or slides you can slip off easily. Hot sand and long hems do not mix well with heels.
