What to wear to your own baby shower

A baby shower outfit for the mum to be: a made-to-measure shape with room for the bump on the day, colours that photograph well and a cut to wear after the birth.

Cut it for the day, not the day you order

As the guest of honour, wear a soft outfit cut to your measurements as close to the shower as the making and shipping time allows, with room at the bust and over the bump, and a waistline that sits above the bump or flows past it rather than cutting across it. Choose a colour that stands out from the decorations and a shape you will want to wear again after the baby arrives.

Your shape can change quickly in the weeks before a shower, so the most useful thing you can tell a tailor is how far along you will be on the day. Our guide to measuring for a pregnancy-friendly outfit explains which measurements matter and where to leave extra room.

Working back from the date

Making takes 5 to 7 working days once your quote is approved and paid in full, and shipping time to your country comes on top. Count back from the shower, leave a margin for the parcel, and take your measurements as late as that plan allows.

When you send them, say clearly that the outfit is for a pregnancy and give the date of the event. Ask for ease over the bump and bust, a slightly longer front hem so it does not ride up, and an adjustable waist on the trousers. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Shapes that leave room

These cuts are kind to a growing bump and look intentional in photographs. The maternity kurtas guide covers adjustable details in more depth.

  • A-line kameez: narrow at the shoulders and widening gently to the hem, so it skims the bump. See the A-line kameez page.
  • Frock or kalidar cut: many panels give a swingy hem that suits a seated photograph in a decorated chair.
  • A tiered maxi dress: gathered tiers fall from under the bust. Our tiered maxi dress can be ordered made to measure.
  • Wide or drawstring trousers: a shalwar or straight trouser with a drawstring or soft elastic waist that sits below the bump.
  • Front opening: a placket, buttons or a discreet zip at the front helps later if you plan to breastfeed.

For the photographs

You will be photographed seated, standing beside a cake, opening gifts and in groups. A solid colour or a soft, mid-sized print works better than a busy pattern against balloons and flower walls. Ask what the decorations look like: if the theme is pale pink or blue, a deeper shade such as teal, coral or emerald stops you blending into the backdrop.

Chiffon and georgette drape beautifully over a bump but cling when they catch a breeze, so ask for a lining. Satin and tissue shine under flash and show every crease from sitting. Cotton silk and cambric sit in between.

Godh bharai and other blessings

In a godh bharai, the South Asian blessing whose name means “filling the lap”, the mother to be usually sits at the centre while relatives bless her and place gifts, sweets or fruit in her lap. Families do it in different ways, and some choose a colour for the mother. Ask whoever is organising it before you choose fabric.

Because you will sit on a low seat or floor cushions, a long kameez with generous side slits and a dupatta that drapes without slipping are practical choices. A light dupatta over the shoulders frames the bump in pictures, or hides it if you prefer.

Making it last beyond the shower

A good shower outfit becomes an Eid or dawat outfit later. Front openings suit feeding, and an A-line or tiered shape still looks right once the bump has gone. You can have one made through our custom stitching service and request a quote with your due date and the shower date in the notes.

Common questions

Should I order in my usual size and hope it stretches?

It is safer to measure close to the event and ask for ease at the bust and bump. A made-to-measure outfit is cut from the numbers you send, so the most recent measurements give the closest result.

Do I have to match the baby shower colour theme?

No. As the mother to be, a colour that stands out from the theme often looks better in photographs. If the hosts have chosen a palette, a deeper shade from the same family is a good compromise.

Can I wear the outfit again while breastfeeding?

If you plan for it, yes. Ask for a front opening such as buttons, a placket or a hidden zip, and a cut that is loose enough to lift or open discreetly.
