What to wear when you do not know the dress code

What to wear when you don’t know the dress code: read the venue, time and host, then wear a middle outfit you can dress up or down with dupatta, jewellery and shoes.

Aim for the middle, then adjust

When an invitation gives no dress code, wear a middle outfit: smarter than everyday, simpler than your most formal piece, and built so that the dupatta, jewellery, shoes and a layer can move it up or down once you see the room. A plain or tonal suit in a good fabric with a little embroidery is the classic version.

Before you choose, spend two minutes on the clues. They narrow the range a great deal.

Clues hiding in the invitation

Even a one-line message tells you something. Put these together and the likely level usually becomes clear:

  • Venue: a home, a restaurant, a hotel ballroom, a community hall or a garden each suggest a different level.
  • Time: daytime events tend to be lighter in colour and fabric; evening events allow more shine and detail.
  • Host: an older relative, a colleague or a university society set different expectations.
  • How you were invited: a printed card usually means a dressier event than a WhatsApp message.
  • The occasion: a birthday tea, a farewell dinner and an anniversary party sit at different points on the scale.
  • Other guests: ask someone else who is going. Asking the host directly is also perfectly polite.

What a middle outfit looks like

Choose one strong element and keep the rest calm. A long kameez in a single mid or jewel tone with straight or wide trousers, and delicate embroidery at the neckline, looks polished at a dawat and does not feel out of place in a hall. A matching set in a quiet texture works the same way; our articles on plain suits with presence and tonal three-piece suits have ideas.

Avoid the extremes: everyday printed lawn at one end, heavy statement embroidery at the other. A plain band collar or round neck keeps the base neutral enough to dress either way.

Changing gear on arrival

Fold a second, dressier dupatta into your bag. If you walk in and everyone is dressed up, swap it; if the room is relaxed, keep the plain one. The same thinking applies to the rest:

  • Dupatta: plain cotton for relaxed, chiffon with a border for formal.
  • Jewellery: small studs at first; statement earrings from your bag if needed.
  • Shoes: smart flats or khussa suit both ends; heels push it up.
  • Layer: a tailored jacket or a neat shawl looks deliberate in either setting.

Overdressed or underdressed?

If you must err, slightly overdressed is usually easier to fix: you can take off the dupatta and jewellery, but you cannot add embroidery. The exception is a deliberately casual gathering such as a picnic or a barbecue, where a dressy outfit feels awkward all afternoon.

A middle outfit is also a good first made-to-measure order, because you will wear it often. Our custom stitching service makes it to your measurements; ask in your quote request for the fabric, a delicate embroidery level and the length you want, and we confirm what is possible in the written quote. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, plus shipping. Browse weekend and gathering ideas for more.

Common questions

Is it rude to ask the host what to wear?

No. Hosts are usually glad to be asked, and a short question such as whether it is dressy or relaxed is easy to answer.

Can one middle outfit cover lots of events?

Yes, which is the point of it. Changing the dupatta, jewellery and shoes gives it a different look each time, so it suits dinners, small parties and family visits alike.

What if the invitation just says smart?

Treat it as the middle level: a good fabric, a neat fit and a little detail. Everyday prints and very heavy embroidery both miss the mark.
