What to wear with white trousers

What to wear with white trousers or a white shalwar: colours, prints and top lengths that look fresh through every season, plus how to keep white opaque.

Almost anything, if you match the season

White trousers go with almost every colour and print, so the real question is which tops look freshest at different times of year. In summer, bright colours, pastels and busy prints look crisp against white. In autumn and winter, camel, rust, olive, navy and cream give white trousers a warmer, richer look. For length, a top ending at the hip, mid-thigh or knee usually sits better over white than one ending exactly at the crotch.

Colours and prints through the year

White acts like a blank page, which is why the same pair of trousers can look so different from month to month.

  • Spring. Pastels such as mint, lilac and blush, and small floral prints. Light lawn kurtas look especially fresh.
  • Summer. Bright colours such as coral, turquoise, yellow and hot pink, block prints and stripes. Navy and white is the classic sharp pairing.
  • Autumn. Camel, rust, olive, mustard and burgundy. White trousers keep earthy colours from looking heavy.
  • Winter. Cream, ivory and grey for a tonal winter white look, or navy and black for contrast, with a heavier fabric such as khaddar on top.

Top lengths that work over white

Because white trousers draw the eye, where the top ends matters. A top ending at the hip shows off the trousers and works with tucked or loose shirts. A mid-thigh or knee-length kurta gives a long, clean line and covers the seat. A calf-length kurta over white trousers makes a classic traditional outfit, especially with side slits that show the white beneath.

The length to avoid is one that ends right at the top of the leg, where it cuts the outline at its widest point. Our guide to kameez length and trouser pairings goes into which length suits which trouser shape.

Which kameez with a white shalwar

A white shalwar is one of the most useful pieces in a traditional wardrobe, because it goes with almost any kameez you own. Printed lawn kameez in any colour, white-on-white embroidered kurtas, bright solids and block prints all work. For a plain white shalwar with a printed kameez, choose a dupatta in one colour from the print. For a white-on-white outfit, a coloured dupatta is the easiest way to add life.

Straight white trousers look a little sharper than a shalwar, especially for work; see straight trousers for how they sit.

Keeping white trousers opaque

Many white fabrics are slightly see-through, especially fine lawn and voile. Choose a denser cotton, cambric or linen, or ask for a lining. Skin-tone underwear is less visible under white than white underwear. Our guides to non see-through fabrics and to lining a kameez or trousers explain how to test.

If you are ordering white trousers or a shalwar made to measure, say in your quote request that opacity matters, and we confirm the fabric and any lining in writing. Order through custom stitching, and use the quote form to start.

Common questions

Can you wear white trousers in winter?

Yes. Pair them with cream, ivory, camel or grey in heavier fabrics for a winter white look, or with navy and black for contrast. A thicker cotton or wool-blend trouser looks more seasonal than thin summer cotton.

What colour kurta goes with white trousers for work?

Navy, grey, sky blue, olive and soft pastels all look professional. A plain or small-print kurta at knee length with white straight trousers is a smart, easy outfit.

Do white trousers need lining?

Often, yes, especially in fine cotton. A dense weave may not need it. Hold the fabric up to light or try it on in daylight to check before deciding.
