Which neckline suits broad shoulders?
V-necks and narrower necklines suit broad shoulders by pulling the eye inward. Which widths, depths and collars help, whether a boat neck works and what to avoid.
InspirationStart with a V
A V-neck suits broad shoulders more reliably than any other neckline, because its two edges run inward toward the centre and pull attention away from the outer shoulder line. Other narrow, downward shapes, such as a sweetheart, a deep scoop or a narrow square, do the same job.
The idea behind every tip on this page is the same: you are not trying to hide your shoulders but to balance them. Anything that adds a strong horizontal line at shoulder level makes them look wider, and anything that adds a vertical line or interest lower down evens out the frame.
Width, depth and shape
Two measurements decide how a neckline reads on broad shoulders: how far it spreads toward the shoulder points and how deep it drops. Keep the first moderate and let the second do the work.
- [V-neck](/styles/necklines/v-neck): a medium or deep V that stays narrow at the top. The longer the V, the narrower the shoulders look.
- [Sweetheart](/styles/necklines/sweetheart-neck): the curves draw the eye inward and down, and it softens a strong frame.
- Scoop: go deeper rather than wider. A wide, shallow scoop pushes toward the shoulders.
- [Square](/styles/necklines/square-neck): choose a narrow square that stays well inside the shoulder line. A wide one copies the shape of the shoulders and exaggerates it.
- Halter or cut-in armholes: a cut that angles in from the underarm toward the neck shows less of the shoulder width, which is why it is often suggested for this build.
Does a boat neck suit broad shoulders?
Usually not. A boat neck runs almost straight across from one shoulder to the other, so it underlines exactly the width you want to soften. Off-shoulder and very wide square necklines have the same effect.
If you love the look, ask for a narrower boat that ends well short of the shoulder points, with a gentle dip at the centre front, and pair it with full or three-quarter sleeves in the same colour so there is no break at the shoulder.
Collars, sleeves and the rest of the kameez
A collar can work if it opens into a V. A shirt or notched collar worn open at the front suits broad shoulders well, while a wide flat collar that spreads across the shoulders, such as a large Peter Pan, adds width. Our collar guide shows the main types.
- Sleeves: plain, set-in sleeves with the seam on the true shoulder point. Avoid puffs, gathers or ruffles at the top of the arm; put volume lower down, as with a bell sleeve.
- Shoulder seam: it must sit exactly at your shoulder point. Too wide and the kameez looks boxy, too narrow and it pulls. An accurate shoulder measurement matters more than usual.
- Embellishment: keep it off the shoulders and yoke. Work on the hem, sleeves or down the front balances the frame.
- Cut below: an A-line or gently flared kameez adds width at the hem and evens out the silhouette.
Ordering a kameez for broad shoulders
Measure your shoulder width from one shoulder point to the other across the back, and give us your preferred neckline depth from the base of the throat. If you are between ideas, choose “Advise me” and describe what you want to balance. With custom stitching, the neckline, shoulder and sleeve are agreed in the written quote before cutting. Common questions
Is a round neck all right for broad shoulders?
A standard round neck is neutral. It does not add width, but it does not balance either. Dropping it a little or adding a front slit gives it some of the benefit of a V.
Do raglan sleeves help broad shoulders?
Often, yes. The diagonal seam from underarm to neckline breaks up the shoulder line, much as a V-neck does. Send a photo if you want this style and we will confirm it in the quote.
