Winter wedding guest outfits: warm, formal, made to fit
Winter wedding guest outfits: velvet, karandi and raw silk, warm layers that still look formal, and what to ask for in sleeves, length and embroidery when ordering.
InspirationWarm enough outside, comfortable inside
A winter wedding guest outfit has to cope with two climates: freezing car parks and doorways, then a crowded, heated hall. The answer is a formal kameez in a fabric with some body, such as velvet, karandi or raw silk, cut with full sleeves and room for a fine layer underneath, plus a shawl, waistcoat or long coat you can remove once inside.
Winter is a busy wedding season for many Pakistani families abroad, as relatives can travel in the holidays. For everyday cold-weather fabrics, our winter fabrics guide compares khaddar, karandi, marina and linen; this article is about dressing up.
Winter wedding guest outfit ideas
- A velvet kameez with silk trousers: deep emerald, maroon or navy velvet looks rich under hall lighting and is genuinely warm.
- An embroidered karandi suit: karandi’s slightly textured weave holds embroidery well. Our embroidered karandi suit is one example; the karandi page explains the fabric.
- A raw silk or cotton silk kameez with a velvet shawl: a lighter kameez for the hall, with all the warmth in a shawl you drape for photos outside.
- A long kameez with a velvet waistcoat or jacket: structured and smart, and easy to take off when the dancing starts.
- A long Western dress with sleeves: in a heavier crepe or velvet, with a wrap coat over it.
Layering without losing the shape
Thermal layers and tights are invisible if the outfit is cut for them. Tell us when you send measurements that you plan to wear a fine layer underneath, and we allow a little more ease through the bust, waist and sleeves so nothing pulls. Full sleeves keep your arms warm and look formal in photographs.
Plan the kameez length with your coat in mind. A kameez that ends a few centimetres below the coat hem looks deliberate; one that is the same length bunches. Our autumn layering guide has more on pairing kameez with coats and cardigans.
Colours that glow in winter light
Short, grey days and warm indoor lighting favour deep, saturated colours. Emerald, sapphire, burgundy, plum, bottle green and midnight blue all look rich in velvet and raw silk, and they hide the wear of a long evening better than pale shades. Metallic embroidery in gold or antique silver stands out beautifully against them.
Pastels still work in winter if you add depth with texture: a dusty pink kameez with a velvet shawl in a darker shade of the same colour, or an ivory raw silk with a deep green waistcoat. If you are attending several winter events, keep one dark coat or wrap that goes with every outfit, so you are not choosing outerwear every time.
What to ask for: fabric, embroidery and length
- Fabric: velvet, karandi, raw silk, khaddar silk or jacquard. Mention if your fabric is heavy, so the seams and lining are planned for it.
- Embroidery level: detailed suits most winter receptions; statement work looks wonderful on velvet for an evening event. What is possible on your fabric and design is confirmed in your written quote.
- Length: calf or floor length looks most formal and adds warmth. Give your heel or boot height.
- Lining: a lining helps heavier fabrics hang well and adds a layer of warmth.
- Pieces: a shawl or waistcoat in place of a fine dupatta is often more practical in winter.

Common questions
What fabric is warmest for a winter wedding outfit?
Velvet is the warmest formal choice, followed by karandi and khaddar silk. Raw silk with a velvet shawl or waistcoat is a good balance if the hall will be warm.
Can I wear thermals under a formal kameez?
Yes, if the outfit is cut for them. Mention it when you send measurements, so a little extra ease is allowed through the body and sleeves.
Can you supply velvet for my outfit?
With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric and make the outfit. The written quote shows the fabric, design, measurements and total cost before you pay.
