Set-in, dropped or raglan: abaya shoulder styles

Raglan sleeve abaya, drop shoulder or set-in sleeve? How each shoulder seam is built, how it looks, how far you can reach in it, layering, and what to measure.

Three ways to join a sleeve

Set-in, dropped and raglan are the three main ways a sleeve can be joined to the body of an abaya. A set-in sleeve has a seam that circles the arm at the shoulder point, for a neat, tailored line. A dropped shoulder moves that seam down onto the upper arm, for a relaxed shape with room for layers. A raglan sleeve runs a diagonal seam from the underarm up to the neckline, which gives easy reach and a soft, sloping shoulder.

A fourth family, the cut-on sleeve of the kimono abaya and the butterfly abaya, has no shoulder seam at all, and is covered in those guides.

Set-in sleeves

The sleeve is a separate piece with a rounded top, the sleeve cap, eased into a round armhole. The seam sits on the bony point at the outer end of the shoulder. It gives the crispest outline and suits coat-style abayas and office wear.

It is also the least forgiving. The shoulder width must be right, and reach depends on how high the armhole is cut and how the cap is shaped; a low armhole is the usual reason an abaya rides up, explained in why an abaya lifts when you raise your arms. Over a thick jumper or coat it can feel snug unless extra ease is planned.

Key measurements: shoulder width from point to point, upper arm, and sleeve length from the shoulder point to the wrist.

Dropped shoulders

The body is cut wider at the top so the shoulder seam falls below your shoulder, onto the arm, and the sleeve is shorter to make up the difference. The result is a boxier, easy-going shape that looks modern on straight and oversized abayas.

There is plenty of room for layers underneath, which makes it practical in a cold winter; see winter abayas. Reach is fair, and there is more cloth gathered under the arm than with a set-in sleeve.

Key measurements: your real shoulder width plus how far down the arm you want the seam to sit, and the full arm length taken from the centre back of the neck to the wrist, so the sleeve can be worked out from the drop.

Raglan sleeves

Each sleeve includes a wedge of the shoulder, joined to the front and back by diagonal seams that run from the underarm to the neckline. On a closer fit, a dart or seam over the top of the shoulder shapes it to the curve of the arm.

Reach is excellent, because there is no seam at the shoulder point to hold the arm down, which makes raglan a good match for active or practical abayas. It suits soft crepes and knits, and layers well over a jumper. The diagonal line also softens a square shoulder.

Key measurements: sleeve length from the centre back of the neck, over the shoulder and down a slightly bent arm to the wrist, plus the upper arm.

Side by side, and how to ask

Choose by what matters most to you: a sharp outline, room for layers, or freedom to move. Then send a photo of the shoulder you like with your abaya enquiry. We confirm the construction on your fabric and design in the written quote. Our guides to abaya sleeve styles and shoulder and bust ease help with the rest, and the custom abaya page explains how ordering works.

  • Look: set-in is the most tailored, dropped the most relaxed, raglan soft and sloping.
  • Reach: raglan first, then set-in with a high armhole, then dropped, depending on how far it drops.
  • Over a coat or jumper: dropped and raglan take layers easily; set-in needs planned ease.
  • What to measure: set-in from the shoulder point, dropped and raglan from the centre back neck. Write down how you measured.

Common questions

Which shoulder style lets you reach up most easily?

Raglan and cut-on sleeves usually allow the most reach. A set-in sleeve with a high armhole comes next, and a dropped shoulder sits in between, depending on how far the seam drops.

Does a dropped shoulder look untidy?

Not when it is planned. The seam sits at the same point on both arms and the body is cut with matching ease, so it looks deliberate rather than too big.

How do I measure sleeve length for a raglan abaya?

Start at the centre back of the neck, go over the top of the shoulder and down the outside of a slightly bent arm to the wrist bone. Note in your enquiry that you measured it this way.
