Embroidered and lace abayas for dressier days

How to plan an embroidered abaya or lace abaya: where decoration sits best, tonal or contrast thread, choosing a level of work, care and storage, and your own abaya.

When an abaya should be a little more

An embroidered abaya or a lace abaya turns a garment usually chosen for practicality into something you dress up in: for Eid, a family dinner, a graduation or an aqiqah. The secret is not how much decoration there is, but where it sits and how well it suits the fabric beneath it. A narrow band in the right place often looks richer than heavy work everywhere.

We add embroidery, lace and borders as part of an abaya we are making, through our custom abaya service. We do not promise any particular technique in advance: describe the effect you want, add a reference photo if you have one, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Choosing a level of work

The quote form offers three levels of fancy work, which is a simple way to say how dressy you want the abaya to be:

  • Delicate: work at the neckline or the sleeves. Elegant enough for a dinner and quiet enough for a weekday.
  • Detailed: neckline, sleeves and hem, so the decoration frames the abaya from top to bottom.
  • Statement: bolder work for Eid and parties, when the abaya is the outfit rather than a cover for it.

Where embroidery and lace look their best

Cuffs and sleeves move with your hands and are seen in almost every photograph; a lace cuff on a plain sleeve is one of the simplest ways to dress an abaya up. The front edges of an open abaya frame whatever is underneath, so a border down each side draws the eye vertically and lengthens the figure. The hem gives weight and swing. The back yoke, across the shoulders, is a less common placement that looks striking when you are seated.

If you want to understand the difference between the main kinds of embroidery before you decide, our machine and hand embroidery guide explains them in general terms, and our net and lace guide covers how lace behaves.

Tonal or contrast?

Tonal work, such as black thread on black or navy on navy, shows only as texture and catches the light as you move. It is understated and endlessly wearable. Contrast work, such as gold on black, ivory on taupe or silver on navy, is more festive and photographs clearly from a distance. A middle path is a thread one or two shades lighter than the base, which gives depth without shouting.

Think about your jewellery too. If you wear gold, warm-toned thread will harmonise with it; if you wear silver, a cooler tone may suit better.

Already own an abaya you would like embroidered?

Since October 2026 we also offer embroidery on its own, on a garment or fabric you already have. You describe the work, we confirm the abaya is suitable, and only then do you send it to us in Pakistan; it is embroidered and shipped back, in two separate shipping stages, and it is quoted individually. Customers in the Gulf can read the Kuwait fancy work page for how this works from there. Start with the general quote form and describe the abaya and the work you have in mind.

Caring for decoration

Embroidered and lace abayas last longest when they are washed gently, turned inside out, and never wrung. Store them folded with tissue between the layers, or hung on a padded hanger if the fabric is heavy, away from damp and moths. Our guides on washing embroidered suits and storing embroidered pieces apply equally to abayas.

Common questions

Can you embroider an abaya I already own?

Yes. Embroidery is offered on its own on a customer’s garment. We confirm the abaya is suitable before you send it to us in Pakistan, and the work is quoted individually.

Do you offer mirror work or sequins on abayas?

Specific techniques are not promised in advance. Describe the look you want and add a reference photo, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Is tonal or contrast embroidery better on an abaya?

Tonal work is understated and easy to wear often, while contrast work such as gold on black is more festive and photographs clearly. A thread a shade or two lighter than the base is a gentle middle path.

Where should embroidery go on an abaya?

Cuffs, front edges and the hem are the most flattering placements, because they frame the silhouette and move as you walk. A back yoke is a striking alternative.
