Everyday abayas for university and daily life

How to plan an everyday abaya for university, errands and the school run: easy cuts, washable fabrics, pockets, a rain-safe hem and colours that go with everything.

The abaya you reach for every morning

An everyday abaya earns its place by being easy: quick to put on, comfortable through lectures, labs, bus rides and supermarket queues, and simple to wash at the weekend. It does not need to be plain or dull, but it does need to cope with real life, including backpacks, bicycles, rain and the occasional spilled coffee.

Ordering one made to measure lets you set the length, the sleeve and the amount of room exactly as you like them, which matters more for something worn five days a week than for an outfit worn once a year. Our made-to-measure abaya service quotes each one individually. For kurta and kameez ideas for student life, see university and campus outfits.

A cut that works with bags and bikes

Daily life puts strain on an abaya in places a party outfit never sees. Plan for it:

  • Shoulders: a rucksack or crossbody strap rubs at the shoulder, so a sturdy fabric and a neat, set-in shoulder last longer than a delicate draped one.
  • Room to stride: a gentle A-line, or a straight cut with side slits that start low on the leg, lets you climb stairs and catch a bus without lifting the hem.
  • Closed or snap front: a closed abaya or one with concealed snaps stays put in wind and on a bicycle.
  • Sleeves: a straight sleeve with a cuff is easy in labs, kitchens and libraries. Our full sleeves page shows the classic version.

Length for rain, stairs and pavements

Floor-length looks graceful, but on a wet pavement it soaks up water and grit within minutes. For a daily abaya, many women prefer a hem that sits just above the ankle bone in flat shoes or trainers. If you are tall or petite, a custom length is one of the main reasons to order made to measure, because ready-made abayas rarely come in more than two or three lengths. Our guide to kameez length for your height explains how proportion changes with height, and the same thinking applies to an abaya hem.

Washable fabrics and easy colours

Choose a fabric you can wash at home without fuss. In general, a mid-weight matte fabric with a slight texture hides creases and lint, and a cotton or cotton blend is cool in warm months. Very fine chiffons and silky fabrics look lovely but snag on bag zips and desk edges.

For colour, think about what is already in your wardrobe. Navy, charcoal, olive, mocha, slate blue and black all go with a wide range of scarves and trainers. One abaya in a neutral and a second in a colour you love is a practical starting pair. Tell us how you will use it and we confirm a suitable fabric in the written quote.

Pockets and other small comforts

Ask for side-seam pockets on any everyday abaya: you will use them for your phone, student card and keys many times a day. A slightly roomier fit through the back is worth having if you sit for long lectures, and a soft, breathable lining, if the fabric needs one, makes a big difference in a warm classroom. Our ease guide explains how much room feels comfortable without looking oversized.

Sending your own fabric, or letting us supply it

If you already have a length you like, the Stitching Only route lets you post it to us in Pakistan after we confirm it suits an abaya and that there is enough. Production starts when it arrives. Otherwise, Fabric + Stitching means we supply the agreed fabric. Either way, production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and the finished abaya is then shipped to you.

Studying in Manchester or anywhere else in Britain? The UK Stitching Only page explains sending fabric from there. Measure using our size guide, then send the details through the stitching quote form.

Common questions

What is a good length for an everyday abaya?

Many women choose a hem that sits just above the ankle in flat shoes, because it stays clear of wet pavements and stairs while still looking long.

Can I send my own fabric for an everyday abaya?

Yes, through Stitching Only. We confirm that the fabric is suitable and that there is enough before you post anything, and production starts once it reaches us.

Which fabrics are easiest for daily wear?

A mid-weight, matte fabric that washes well at home is usually easiest. Very fine or silky fabrics snag on bags and desks. We confirm the fabric in the written quote.
