Lounge suit or national dress on a UK invitation
For women, a lounge suit dress code means a smart day dress or tailored outfit, not black tie. What lounge suit, morning dress and national dress mean for a kameez.
InspirationThe short answer
Lounge suit is the British name for a business suit, and on an invitation it sets the level of formality: men in a suit and tie, women in a smart dress, a tailored outfit or the equivalent. In kameez terms that means a well-cut, calf or knee-length kameez in a good fabric with light embroidery, not a party outfit and not anything casual. It is less formal than black tie and smarter than smart casual.
Two other British terms often appear beside it: morning dress, for formal daytime events, and national dress, which invites guests to wear the formal dress of their own culture instead.
What each term means
British invitations describe what the men should wear and leave women to match the level. These are the usual meanings.
- Lounge suit: a suit and tie. For women, a smart day or cocktail dress, a tailored outfit, or a formal kameez of the same level.
- Morning dress: the most formal daytime code, with morning coats for men. Women wear formal day dresses or tailored outfits, usually with a hat or fascinator. It appears on formal daytime weddings and some race meetings.
- Day dress with hat: sometimes written as the women’s half of a morning dress code; it means the same.
- National dress: an open invitation to wear your own culture’s formal dress, at the same level as the other codes on the card. A formal shalwar kameez answers it exactly.
- Black tie: an evening code with dinner jackets, and a separate subject.
Matching a kameez to each level
Fabric, length and embroidery level do most of the work. Our embroidery levels are delicate (neckline or sleeves), detailed (neckline, sleeves and hem) and statement (bolder work), and custom embroidery explains them.
- For lounge suit: cotton silk or raw silk, or crisp lawn in summer; a straight or A-line kameez to the calf; delicate embroidery; straight trousers; a dupatta optional.
- For morning dress or day dress with hat: a lighter colour, raw silk or a structured cotton silk, detailed embroidery and an organza or chiffon dupatta. A hat or fascinator sits comfortably with a dupatta worn over the shoulders.
- For national dress at a daytime event: match the formality of the morning or lounge suit code, usually with detailed embroidery.
- For national dress in the evening: richer fabric and detailed or statement work, as you would for a dinner or reception.
Garden parties, civic events and the weather
Royal garden party guidance has long included national dress alongside morning dress and lounge suit, and civic receptions, embassy events and some graduation ceremonies use similar wording. These are often daytime events outdoors, so plan for British weather: a lining or a light layer for a cool afternoon, shoes with a block heel for lawns, and a fabric that does not crease badly after hours of standing. Our guides to summer garden party outfits and cotton silk and raw silk go further.
If you are unsure
Ask the host, or choose slightly smarter rather than slightly plainer; a dupatta can always come off. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from the approval and full payment of your quote, with shipping on top, so order once the invitation arrives rather than the week before. UK quotes are in pounds sterling; the UK page covers delivery, and you can request a quote with the dress code in your notes.
Common questions
Does national dress on an invitation mean I have to wear it?
No. It is an option, not an instruction. You can wear the formal dress of your own culture or follow the other code on the card, whichever you prefer.
Is lounge suit the same as cocktail attire?
They are close. Cocktail usually suggests an evening event and a shorter dress, while lounge suit can be day or evening, but both sit below black tie and above smart casual.
What is the female equivalent of morning dress?
A formal day dress or tailored outfit, usually with a hat or fascinator. A formal kameez in a light colour with detailed embroidery fits the same level.
