Who does a Patiala shalwar suit? Height and frame

Patiala shalwar for short height, tall or fuller frames: how the deep pleats sit on each figure, and which kurta length keeps the volume in proportion.

Most frames, with the right pleats and kurta

A Patiala shalwar can work on almost any height or frame; what changes is how much fabric and pleating goes into it and how long the kurta above it is. Petite wearers usually do best with softer fabric, fewer pleats and a short kurti; tall wearers can carry the full traditional volume; on fuller hips, pleats that lie flat at the waist let the volume start lower down.

A Patiala is a very full shalwar whose fabric is folded into many deep pleats at the waistband, so it falls in heavy, layered folds down the leg to a snug cuff at the ankle. It is named after the city of Patiala in Punjab. Our article on types of salwar suit sets it beside the other named styles, and the shalwar page covers the plain version.

On a petite frame

The risk on a shorter figure is that the volume takes over and the legs look shorter. A few adjustments keep it light.

  • Fewer, softer pleats: a Patiala with moderate fullness drapes closer to the leg than one made with the full traditional amount of cloth.
  • A drapey fabric: soft cotton, lawn, crepe or silk falls in narrow folds; crisp cotton stands out in wide ones.
  • A short kurti: hip length to upper thigh shows the leg line and the drape, instead of cutting the figure in half.
  • The cuff at the ankle bone: a cuff that sits too high shortens the leg; too long and the folds bunch over the foot.
  • One colour top to bottom: a matching or tonal kurta and shalwar lets the eye travel in one line. The petite frame guide covers lengths.

On a tall frame

Height carries volume easily, so a tall wearer can enjoy the full, swinging traditional Patiala. The thing to watch is length: the shalwar must be long enough that the folds still fall properly and the cuff sits at the ankle rather than mid-shin, which needs more fabric than an average trouser piece. A mid-thigh or knee-length kurta looks natural on a longer leg. The tall women’s lengths guide explains how to give those measurements.

With fuller hips and thighs

Pleats add bulk where they are stitched, so the main question for fuller hips is where the fullness begins. Pleats that are stitched flat for the first few centimetres below the waistband release lower, so the hip line stays smooth and the folds open over the thigh. A soft fabric helps again. A kurta that reaches mid-thigh, cut straight with side slits, covers the top of the pleats and lets the drape show below. If you would rather not add width at the hip at all, a straight trouser or a moderately full plain shalwar may suit you better.

Ordering a Patiala

Patiala is not a named style on our quote form, so choose shalwar, attach a photo and describe how full you want it. A Patiala takes considerably more fabric than a plain shalwar, and the trouser piece in an unstitched suit is often not enough for one; if you are sending your own fabric through Stitching Only, we confirm the quantity before you post anything. Everything else is agreed in the written quote. Start a Stitching Only quote with your fabric photos.

Common questions

Can short girls wear a Patiala shalwar?

Yes. A moderately full Patiala in a soft fabric, worn with a short kurti and a cuff at the ankle bone, keeps the proportion balanced on a petite frame. Matching colours top and bottom help too.

Does a Patiala need more fabric than a normal shalwar?

Yes, a good deal more, because of the deep pleats. How much depends on your height, the fabric width and how full you want it, so the quantity is confirmed before anything is bought or sent.

Is a Patiala shalwar comfortable for everyday wear?

Many people find it very comfortable, since nothing grips the leg. In summer, choose a light cotton or lawn, because the many layers of pleated fabric can feel warm in a heavier cloth.
