What colours go with brown?
What colours go with brown? Chocolate, tan and camel with cream, blue, green and rust, whether brown works with black, and using brown in place of black.
InspirationCream, blue, green and rust
Brown goes with cream and white, with blues from sky to navy, with greens such as olive, sage and teal, and with warm colours such as rust, mustard and soft pink. Chocolate, the deepest brown, can even replace black as the dark base of a wardrobe, which makes everything around it look a little warmer.
Browns vary as much as greys, so it helps to know which one you are working with:
- Chocolate: a deep brown that can read almost black in dim light.
- Tan and caramel: mid browns with a golden cast.
- Camel: a light, sandy brown, the colour of a classic winter coat.
Partners by colour family
Brown is easy to pair once you treat it as a warm neutral. Each family below works with all three browns, with small differences noted.
- Cream, ivory and white. The most reliable. Chocolate with cream looks rich; camel with white looks fresh.
- Blue. Sky blue, powder blue and denim lift chocolate, and navy with camel is a classic smart pairing.
- Green. Olive, sage and teal sit naturally beside brown, the way leaves sit beside bark. Chocolate with emerald is good for evenings.
- Rust, terracotta and mustard. A warm autumn palette. Keep brown as the base and add one of these rather than all three.
- Pink. Dusty pink or blush with chocolate is soft and modern; hot pink with chocolate is bolder.
- Gold. Gold thread on chocolate looks festive without shouting.
Using brown instead of black
Many wardrobes are built around black because it goes with everything. Chocolate or deep brown does almost the same job with a softer, warmer effect. If you swap your dark base from black to brown, change the supporting pieces too: tan or cognac shoes and bags instead of black, gold-toned jewellery rather than silver, and cream rather than bright white as the light neutral.
A small brown capsule might be chocolate straight trousers, a camel kurta, a cream kurta, a printed kameez with brown and blue in it, and a rust or teal dupatta to change the mood. Our capsule wardrobe guide shows how to plan the pieces so they all work together. Beige, a close neighbour of camel, is also one of the five colours of our button-front shirt dress.
Can you wear brown with black?
Yes, and it can look smart, but it works best with a clear difference between the two. Camel or tan with black is a sharp, classic contrast. Chocolate with black is subtler and can look like a mismatch in low light, so put something lighter between them, such as a cream top or a printed dupatta, or use different textures. Keep the black to one or two pieces, such as the trousers and shoes, and let the brown lead.
Fabrics and ordering
Brown looks particularly rich in textured and winter fabrics such as khaddar, karandi and velvet. In summer, a camel or tan linen kurta keeps it light and relaxed.
Brown shades vary widely between sellers and screens, and a tan can look orange or grey depending on the light. Send a photo or swatch reference when you order through Fabric + Stitching, and say what you plan to wear it with. Ask for a quote and the fabric and colour are agreed in writing before cutting.
Common questions
What colour dupatta goes with a brown suit?
Cream or ivory for a soft look, rust or mustard for warmth, teal or sky blue for contrast, or a print that combines brown with one of those for an easy match.
Does brown go with grey?
Warm, beige-toned greys sit well with brown. Cool, blue-tinted greys can look dull beside it unless you add a third colour such as cream or blue.
Is brown suitable for Eid or a party?
Yes. Chocolate with gold embroidery, or brown velvet in winter, looks festive. Add a brighter dupatta in teal, rust or pink if you want more colour.
