What to wear for a family photoshoot
What to wear for a family photoshoot: colours that go together without matching, print the camera can read, fabrics that behave under flash and lengths for sitting.
InspirationCoordinate, do not match
Pick a palette of three or four colours and dress everyone within it, rather than putting the whole family in one colour; keep strong prints to one or two people, choose matte fabrics that do not crease badly when you sit, and check that your own outfit looks right seated on the floor as well as standing.
Identical outfits flatten a group into one block and make it hard to see where one person ends and the next begins. A palette, for example ivory, sage, dusty rose and navy, gives variety while still looking planned. Our article on coordinated outfits for sisters and friends uses the same idea for groups of women.
Build the palette around one outfit
We make women’s clothing only, so a practical way to plan is to settle your own outfit first and dress the rest of the family to suit it. The mother’s outfit usually has the most fabric in the frame, especially with a dupatta, so it sets the tone.
Think about the setting as well. Autumn leaves suit rust, mustard and olive; a white studio suits deeper jewel tones; a garden suits soft pastels with one stronger colour. Our guide to matching dupatta and trouser colours helps if you want to spread one palette across the three pieces of a suit.
Print scale through a lens
A camera does not see print the way you do in a mirror. These points hold for most photographers’ setups:
- Tiny, tight prints blur into a flat texture from a distance, and fine stripes or checks can shimmer on a digital sensor.
- Huge prints dominate a group shot and draw the eye away from faces.
- Mid-sized florals and paisleys read clearly and still look soft.
- One patterned piece per person is plenty: a printed dupatta over a plain kameez, or a printed kameez with plain trousers. See pairing printed and plain pieces.
Fabrics: creases, shine and flash
Photo sessions involve a lot of sitting, kneeling and getting up again. Linen photographs with a lovely texture but creases within minutes. Lawn and cotton recover better, and cotton silk keeps a soft sheen without strong glare.
Satin, tissue and metallic thread can bounce flash back as bright white patches. Sheer fabrics can also turn more see-through under strong flash or backlight than they look in a room, so ask for a lining if the kameez is lawn, chiffon or organza.
Lengths that work seated and standing
Most family sessions include a standing group, a seated group and close-ups. A knee or calf-length kameez stays decent and graceful when you sit on the floor with a child on your lap. Very fitted churidar trousers bunch at the ankle in seated poses, while a straight trouser, shalwar or sharara drapes neatly. Choose a dupatta you can arrange once and leave, and pin it if the session is outdoors.
Planning Eid family photographs
If your photographs will be taken on Eid, your Eid outfit and your photo outfit are the same thing, so order early. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is extra. The Eid occasions page has more ideas for the day itself.
If you have a picture of the look you want, our Send Your Design service turns a photo or sketch into an outfit cut to your measurements. Start a design quote and mention the palette in the notes.
Common questions
Which colours are hardest to photograph?
Bright pure white and very saturated neon shades are the trickiest, because they lose detail or cast colour onto faces. Off-white, ivory and slightly muted versions of bright colours photograph more evenly.
Should the mother wear the boldest colour?
Not necessarily. Many families give the strongest colour to one person and keep everyone else softer, so the picture has a focal point. If you are holding a baby, a mid-tone outfit makes the child stand out.
Can several family members have outfits from the same fabric?
We make women’s clothing only, so we can make outfits for the women in the family. If you want matching fabric across several outfits, mention it in your enquiry and we confirm what is possible in the written quote.
