What to wear to a ladies-only party or gathering

What to wear to a ladies only party: guests often dress up more once inside, so plan the party outfit and the cover-up you arrive and leave in as one set.

The short answer

At a ladies-only party, guests often dress up more once they are inside: shorter or sheer sleeves, fitted shapes, uncovered hair and bolder colours. So plan two layers together: the outfit you will wear in the room, and the cover-up, such as an abaya, long coat or large shawl, that you arrive and leave in. The cover-up has to fit over the outfit without crushing it.

How much people reveal varies a lot between families and communities. If you are unsure, ask the host or a friend who has been before.

What changes inside a women-only room

For many women, a segregated event is the one place to wear the things they would not wear in mixed company. That might mean a sleeveless or short-sleeved kameez, a sheer organza overlay with only a slip beneath, a fitted gown, or simply hair and make-up on show. Gulf and South Asian ladies-only weddings and parties are often the dressiest events of the year for exactly this reason.

It also means some hosts ask guests not to take or share photos, so check before you post anything.

Planning the outfit and cover-up together

The cover-up is part of the outfit, not an afterthought. A few points to check:

  • Length: the cover-up should be longer than the outfit underneath, so a floor-length gown needs a floor-length abaya.
  • Width: full skirts, voluminous sleeves and stiff embroidery need room. An open-front abaya is easier over bulky outfits; our guide to open-front and closed abayas compares them.
  • Sleeves: wide sleeves on the cover-up slide over puffed or embellished sleeves without crushing them.
  • Fabric: a smooth lining inside the abaya stops embroidery and sequins from catching.
  • Hair: if you wear a hijab outside, bring pins and a small mirror for redoing it before you leave.

Ideas for the outfit itself

The outfit can be anything you feel good in. Common choices include a fitted kameez with a sheer sleeve, a long gown or maxi dress, a sharara set with a short kurta, or a co-ord in a rich fabric. Statement embroidery is welcome at evening events, while a daytime gathering suits detailed work and lighter colours. Our guide to what to wear under an abaya covers more everyday combinations.

Ordering both pieces

Because we make abayas to measure as well as outfits, you can order the party outfit and the cover-up together, measured so one fits over the other. When you request a quote, describe the outfit and say it will be worn under an abaya, and we confirm the details in the written quote. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, with shipping time on top, so order well before the date.

Common questions

Can I wear sleeveless at a ladies-only party?

At many such events, yes. Customs vary between families and communities, so if you are not sure, ask the host or a friend who knows the family.

Will there be somewhere to change?

Often there is a room or a corner where guests remove their cover-ups and fix their hair. Arrive a little early if you need time.

Should the abaya match the outfit?

It does not have to. A plain black or neutral abaya goes over everything, though some women enjoy a coordinated set for a special event.
