Why a tailor may say your fabric will not suit the design

Fabric not suitable for stitching the design you want? The usual reasons (too sheer, too stiff, too little, an unmatched print, damage) and the options each leaves.

It is about the pairing, not the cloth

A tailor says a fabric will not suit a design when the cloth cannot do what the design asks of it: it is too sheer, too stiff, too short, printed in a way that cannot be lined up, or damaged. It is a judgement about this fabric with this design, not a verdict on the fabric’s quality, and nearly every reason leaves you a choice.

The same piece of lawn that would make a lovely straight kameez may be wrong for a heavily gathered frock. Change either side of the pairing and the answer can change too.

The usual reasons, and what each leaves you

These come up again and again, in any workroom. Each one is followed by the ways round it that a tailor will usually suggest.

  • Too sheer. Fine voile, net or thin lawn shows everything beneath it. Options: add a lining, choose a design with fewer seams on show, or keep the sheer cloth for sleeves or a dupatta. Our lawn guide says more about this cloth.
  • Too stiff. Organza, tissue or a heavily starched cotton will not gather softly or fall into folds. Options: a straighter cut with fewer gathers, or the stiff fabric as an overlay or a panel rather than the whole garment.
  • Too little. A long, flared or full-sleeved design needs more length than a short suit piece has. Options: a shorter kameez, a straighter cut, a different sleeve, or trousers in another fabric.
  • A print that cannot be matched. Large checks, stripes and big repeating motifs have to meet at the seams, which uses extra cloth. Options: accept a mismatch at some seams, or choose a cut with fewer seams.
  • A one-way design. Borders, directional prints and pile fabrics such as velvet must all run the same way. Options: a plan that uses the border where it falls, or a simpler layout.
  • Damage or flaws. A hole, a stain, a dye streak or weak cloth. Options: cut around it if the layout allows, or use the fabric for something smaller.
  • Already partly sewn. A semi-stitched suit has its shape decided. We do not finish those, though a fully unstitched suit is a different matter.

Why the check happens before you post anything

With Stitching Only, your fabric travels to Pakistan and the finished outfit travels back, so there are two shipping stages. It would make no sense to post a parcel only to hear that the cloth is wrong for the design. That is why, on our Stitching Only service, the fabric’s suitability, the quantity needed and how to send it are all confirmed before you post anything.

For the check, clear daylight photos do most of the work: the whole piece laid out with a tape measure beside it, a close-up of the weave, the border or embroidered panels, and any marks you have noticed. Our guide to photographing fabric for a quote shows how.

If the answer is no

A “no” is the start of a conversation. You can change the design to suit the fabric, keep the design and add what is missing, such as a lining, or keep the fabric for another outfit and choose Fabric + Stitching for this one. Whatever is agreed goes into the written quote, and nothing is cut until you approve it. When you are ready, request a Stitching Only quote with your photos.

Common questions

Does unsuitable mean my fabric is poor quality?

Not usually. Most refusals are about the match between the cloth and the design. A fine, expensive fabric can still be wrong for a cut that needs more body or more length than it has.

Can a lining fix a fabric that is too thin?

Often, yes. A lining stops the cloth being see-through and gives it a little more body. It also changes how the garment feels in heat, so say whether you want it cool or covered.

What if I have already posted my fabric?

Please wait for confirmation before sending anything. If a parcel is already on its way, tell us at once so the design can be discussed with your fabric in mind.
