Choosing a kameez silhouette for your shape
A rule-free way to choose a kameez silhouette for your body shape: balancing shoulders, bust and hips with cut, neckline, length and trousers, measured to fit you.
InspirationBalance, not rules
Body-shape charts can make dressing sound like a list of things you are not allowed to wear, and that is not the aim here. A more useful way to choose a Pakistani suit for your body shape is to think about balance: where would you like the eye to land, and where would you like a little more or less volume? The cut of the kameez, the neckline, the length and the trouser style can each move that balance, and when everything is made to your measurements, you can adjust each one precisely.
Wear what you love first. These ideas are for the moments when something you love does not feel quite right and you want to know why.
Fuller hips and thighs
If your hips are wider than your shoulders, an A-line kameez skims past the hips rather than pulling across them, and a neckline with some width, such as a boat or square neck, adds visual weight above. Knee or calf length usually works better than a hem that ends at the widest point of the hips. Straight trousers or a gently wide leg balance the hips; very slim cigarette pants make the top look larger by contrast.
Fuller bust or midsection
For a fuller bust or a softer middle, a V-neck or a round neck with a slit opens up the chest and draws a long vertical line. A straight kameez with gentle shaping, rather than a tight waist or a high, heavily decorated yoke, lets the fabric fall cleanly. An empire line, with the seam just under the bust and a soft flare below, is comfortable and flattering on many people. Leave enough ease across the bust; our guide to how loose a kameez should be explains how a few centimetres make the difference.
Defined waist or straight frame
If your bust and hips are similar with a defined waist, a kameez with waist shaping, a kalidar or panelled skirt, or a belted layer shows that shape. If your frame is straighter, with little difference between waist and hips, you can create curves with flare: a peplum, an angrakha wrap or a kalidar kameez adds movement, while a straight kameez looks sleek and modern without trying to change anything.
Height and proportion
Height changes how every cut reads, which is why length is worth deciding carefully.
- Petite frames: a knee-length or slightly shorter kameez, a slim trouser and fewer horizontal breaks keep the line long; our kameez length guide has more.
- Tall frames: calf and floor lengths come into their own, and wide trousers or a gharara balance the length.
- Long body, shorter legs: a slightly shorter kameez and trousers in the same colour as the kameez lengthen the leg.
- Shorter body, longer legs: a longer kameez with a lower waist detail evens out the proportion.
Putting it into your order
The fastest way to get there is to tell us what you want: “I want my hips to look smaller” or “I’d like more shape at the waist” is a perfectly good brief. Choose “Advise me” for the cut, neckline or length if you would like our suggestion, and compare the two classic cuts in our A-line vs straight guide. If you are sending an unstitched suit, our Stitching Only service for Australia works the same as everywhere else, and customers in Sydney and beyond receive a written quote confirming the agreed cut and measurements before anything is cut.
Common questions
What kameez cut suits a pear shape?
An A-line kameez that skims the hips, with a wider neckline such as a boat or square neck, usually balances fuller hips. Knee or calf length often works better than a hem at the widest point.
Which neckline suits a fuller bust?
A V-neck or a round neck with a slit opens up the chest and creates a long line. Avoid very high, heavily decorated yokes if you want the bust to look smaller.
Can you suggest a style if I do not know my body shape?
Yes. Choose Advise me on the quote form and tell us what you would like to change or show off. We suggest a cut, neckline and length in the quote for you to approve.
