How to wear a jumper over a kurta
How to wear a jumper over a kurta: which jumper lengths and necklines sit well, how much hem and collar to show, and kurta details worth ordering for it.
InspirationShort jumper, longer kurta, a clear gap between the hems
To wear a jumper over a kurta, choose a jumper that ends at the waist or high hip and let the kurta fall well below it, so there is a clear band of kurta showing. A neat kurta collar or neckline peeking over a crew-neck jumper looks deliberate, and slim kurta sleeves fit inside the jumper sleeves without bunching. The outfit goes wrong mainly when the two hems end close together or the kurta sleeves are too full.
Jumper length against kurta length
The kurta should show at least a hand’s width below the jumper, and often much more. With a knee-length kurta, a waist-length or high-hip jumper leaves a generous layer of kurta on show and looks balanced. With a hip-length kurta, the jumper needs to be cropped or to end at the waist. A long jumper over a short kurta, or two hems a few centimetres apart, looks crowded.
Side slits help a great deal. A kurta with side slits opening from the hip lets the lower part fall freely below the jumper’s ribbed hem, instead of being trapped under it and rucking up.
Necklines that work together
Decide whether the kurta neckline will show or hide, then choose the jumper to suit.
- Crew-neck jumper over a band or shirt collar. The kurta collar sits on top of the jumper neckline, which looks neat and slightly preppy. Collar styles for kurtas explains the options.
- V-neck jumper over a round or band neck. The V frames the kurta’s neckline, so a little embroidery or piping there shows nicely.
- Crew-neck jumper over a round neck. The kurta neckline disappears, so it looks like you are wearing just the jumper and a skirt below.
- Polo or turtleneck jumper. Covers everything. Works with a collarless kurta and a plain neckline.
- Avoid heavy neckline embroidery under a close jumper. It creates lumps and the threads can catch on the knit.
Sleeves and fabric
Slim full sleeves or three-quarter sleeves fit comfortably inside a jumper. Bell or wide sleeves bunch into the jumper sleeves and twist; if you love a wider sleeve, push the jumper sleeves up to the elbow or wear a cardigan instead. A kurta cuff or a touch of lace peeking out at the wrist looks pretty when the kurta sleeve is a little longer than the jumper’s.
In winter, a kurta in khaddar or a soft cotton sits well under wool. Very fine lawn can cling to a knit through static; pilling, static and shine covers that problem and how to prevent it.
Sweatshirts and casual layers
A sweatshirt over a kurta and jeans is a relaxed campus or weekend look. The same length rule applies, and a crew-neck sweatshirt with a collared kurta underneath is the neatest version. Our guide to autumn layering with kurtas covers cardigans, coats and shawls if you prefer open layers.
Kurta details worth ordering
If you plan to wear a kurta mostly under jumpers, it helps to order it with that in mind: a neat band or shirt collar, slim sleeves, side slits from the hip and a length that clearly passes the jumper. Embroidery is better placed on the lower hem or the cuffs than across the chest. Common questions
Can you tuck a kurta into a jumper?
Not really. A kurta is meant to fall freely, so it bunches if tucked. Let it hang below the jumper instead, and choose a jumper short enough to leave a good length of kurta showing.
What length jumper goes with a long kurta?
A waist-length or high-hip jumper. It leaves plenty of the long kurta on show and keeps the outfit balanced. Long jumpers look better with short tops and jeans.
Is a cardigan better than a jumper over a kurta?
A cardigan is easier with wide sleeves and full kurtas, and you can take it off without disturbing your dupatta. A jumper gives a neater, more fitted look over a slim kurta.
