Necklines that flatter a small bust

The neckline for a small bust is usually higher or wider, such as a boat, square or band collar, with detail below it. What gapes, what adds shape, what to ask.

Higher and wider usually beats deeper

On a small bust, the necklines that tend to look most balanced sit higher or run wider across the chest: a boat neck, a square neck, a band collar, or a modest round neck with some detail just below it. They put shape and interest across the upper chest, where a deep plunge would leave a long, plain stretch of fabric that often stands away from the body.

That is proportion, not a rule. Plenty of people with a small bust love a deep V and wear it well. The aim here is to explain why some shapes sit more neatly than others, so you can choose with your eyes open and tell your tailor exactly what you want.

Why sweetheart and deep V necks can gape

Some necklines are drafted on the assumption that the bust will fill them. A sweetheart neckline curves down into a dip at the centre and relies on the curve of the bust to hold its two arcs against the body. A deep V does something similar along its two edges. With less fullness underneath, the edge has nothing to rest on, so it lifts or bows outwards when you lean forward. Our article on why a neckline gapes covers the other causes.

Made-to-measure cutting helps, because the pattern starts from your own figures rather than a size block. Give your high bust (round the chest above the bust, under the arms) as well as your full bust. If the two are close, the kameez needs little or no bust shaping, and a neckline drafted to that shape lies flatter. The ease guide explains how much room to leave so the front does not hang in folds.

Necklines to try, and what each one does

Each of these adds width, height or texture across the chest, which is usually what people with a flat chest are after.

  • Boat neck: a wide, shallow line from shoulder to shoulder that draws the eye outwards and hides bra straps well. The boat neck page covers depth and width.
  • Square neck: straight edges and two corners frame the collarbones. Keep the depth moderate so the corners sit on the chest. See the square neck page.
  • Band collar or a high round neck: closes the neckline, so attention moves to whatever sits just below it, such as embroidery, buttons or pin tucks.
  • Round neck with a short slit or keyhole: a little depth at the centre without a long open V.
  • Frilled or tie necklines: a soft frill or a bow at the collar adds volume exactly where it is wanted.

Let the area under the neckline do the work

Often the neckline matters less than what happens beneath it. A yoke across the upper chest with gathers, pleats or pin tucks falling from it adds soft volume over the bust. A contrast yoke, embroidery spread across the chest, chest pockets on a shirt-style kurta and layered collars all build the area up visually. The yokes and panels article shows the main yoke shapes.

Fabric plays its part. Crisp cotton and cambric hold gathers and pleats slightly away from the body, so they keep their shape over a flat chest. Very soft, clingy fabrics such as thin viscose or jersey collapse and follow every line, which hides the detail you asked for.

Putting it into an order

Round, boat, square and band collar necklines are all on our quote form, with an Advise me option if you would like a suggestion. Gathers, a yoke, pin tucks or a frill are design details: send a photo through Send Your Design or describe them in the notes. Common questions

Does a boat neck suit a small bust?

Usually, yes. A boat neck runs wide and shallow across the collarbones, so it adds width to the upper chest instead of drawing a long line down the centre. Ask for a modest front depth so it does not slip off the shoulders.

Should I avoid V-necks if I have a flat chest?

Not at all. A shallow V, a V with a collar or a V framed by embroidery tends to sit well. It is the very deep, open V that is more likely to gape, because its edges have little to rest against.

Does a kameez for a small bust need darts?

It depends on the difference between your high bust and full bust. A small difference needs small darts or none at all. Give both measurements with your order and the pattern is shaped to suit, so the front lies smooth.
