For a snowy winter in Canada or the northern US, dress for the warm, dry indoors and layer for the outdoors: a mid-weight winter fabric such as khaddar, marina or karandi, cut with room for a thermal underneath, worn with trousers that fit over leggings and a kameez length that sits comfortably under your coat. A very heavy suit on its own is usually too warm inside and still not enough outside.

Indoors is warmer than you think
Homes, offices and malls in Toronto, Chicago or Minneapolis are often heated so well that a short-sleeved top is comfortable indoors. A velvet kameez with a lining can feel stifling at a family dinner. That is why the fabric itself should be mid-weight, with warmth coming from layers you add and remove.
The heating also dries the air. Dry air makes synthetic fabrics cling and crackle with static, and it leaves skin itchy, which coarse fabrics then aggravate. A cotton-rich winter fabric, or a soft lining behind a scratchy one, is kinder in a heated house.
Fabrics that suit the pattern

Room for thermals
Many women wear a thin thermal top and leggings under a kameez through the coldest months. That only works if the kameez was cut to allow it. Ask for a little extra ease at the bust, upper arm and armhole when you order, and measure yourself over the thermal you will wear, or tell us its thickness. Sleeves need the most care: a narrow sleeve that fits beautifully over bare skin will bunch over a thermal.
For trousers, a straight trouser or classic shalwar fits over leggings easily. A churidar or slim cigarette pant usually does not.
Coats, boots and kameez length
Think about your coat when you choose the kameez length. A long kameez under a hip-length parka bunches and hangs out below the hem, while a knee-length kameez under a long padded coat sits flat. Snow, slush and road salt mark trouser hems. A trouser that ends just above the top of an ankle boot, or is tucked in, stays cleaner than one that brushes the ground. Deep side slits are graceful but let cold air in, so a moderate slit is more practical for walking outside.
Care in a heated home
Winter fabrics dry slowly indoors. Avoid drying khaddar or marina directly on a hot radiator, which can stiffen and shrink cotton unevenly; a drying rack in a warm room is gentler. Brush coats and shawls before storing them in spring, and store winter suits clean, because stains set over the summer.

What is the warmest fabric for a shalwar kameez?
