What to wear for umrah in winter
What to wear for umrah in winter: a thin warm layer under a loose outer piece, a shawl for cool mornings and cold air conditioning, socks and mid-weight fabrics.
InspirationThe short answer
For a winter umrah, dress in layers rather than in heavy clothes: a thin warm base layer under your usual loose abaya or long kameez, a shawl or wrap for early mornings, late nights and air-conditioned buildings, and socks. Daytime in Makkah often stays warm even in the winter months, so the trick is being able to add and remove warmth, not wearing a winter coat all day.
This article covers practical warmth and comfort only. For anything about what is required in ihram, follow the guidance of your group leader or a scholar you trust.
How winter changes the usual advice
Most umrah clothing advice is written for heat: loose, light, breathable and modest. That still holds for the middle of a winter day. What changes is everything around it.
- Early mornings and nights are noticeably cooler, and you may be walking to or from prayers in the dark.
- Madinah is usually cooler than Makkah in winter, especially in the evenings.
- Air conditioning in hotels, buses and large indoor spaces can feel cold when you are sitting still for a long time.
- Stone floors are cool underfoot in winter, and you may sit on them for long stretches.
A simple layering plan
Think in three layers you can mix through the day:
- Base: a long-sleeved top and leggings or slim trousers in thin cotton or a soft knit. It adds warmth without bulk and stays hidden.
- Main layer: your abaya, or a long, loose kameez and trousers. Our guide to what to wear under an abaya explains how the inner and outer pieces work together.
- Outer warmth: a wool or wool-blend shawl, a cardigan under the abaya or a soft wrap that folds into a bag when the sun is up.
- Extras: socks, a jersey underscarf, which is warmer than chiffon, and gloves if you feel the cold.
Mid-weight fabric, not winter-weight
Heavy winter fabrics are made for cold days, not warm afternoons with long walks. Mid-weight choices are easier to live in:
- For a kameez: cambric or a cotton with a closer weave, rather than khaddar, which is warm but heavy for walking in the midday sun.
- For an abaya: a mid-weight crepe or a matte abaya fabric. Our abaya fabrics guide compares the common options, which are often sold under loose trade names.
- For the shawl: wool or a wool blend, which keeps you warm at night and breathes better than many synthetics.
Comfort details worth asking for
You will walk a long way and sit on the floor often. An abaya or kameez that clears the ground by a little is easier and safer in crowds than one that drags, so measure the length with the shoes you will wear. Pockets keep a phone and room key close without a bag, and roomy trousers make sitting easier.
We make abayas to measure, with our fabric or yours, and kameez and trousers as well. When you ask for a quote, say that it is for a winter trip and mention pockets, length and any inner dress, and we confirm what is possible in the written quote. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time comes on top, so order well before you travel.
Common questions
Do I need a coat for umrah in winter?
Many travellers manage with layers and a warm shawl, but if you feel the cold or are spending several nights in Madinah, a light padded jacket that packs small is worth taking.
Is a thermal top under an abaya too hot?
A thin one is usually fine in the mornings and evenings. Choose one you can take off easily, or rely on a shawl if your days will be mostly outdoors in the sun.
What colours are practical?
That is a personal choice. Many women wear black or white; darker shades hide dust from long walks, while light shades feel cooler in the midday sun.
