House dresses: an easy cotton dress for home and guests

A house dress for women: a loose, washable cotton dress for home that still looks presentable when guests arrive, and the sleeves, neckline and pockets to ask for.

What a good house dress does

A house dress is a loose, comfortable dress for wearing at home, usually in washable cotton, that is still decent enough to open the door or sit with unexpected guests. The good ones sit between nightwear and going-out clothes: easy enough for cooking, cleaning and lounging, covered and neat enough that nobody needs to change when the doorbell rings.

Plenty of people use an old kameez or a nightdress for this, which is why a visitor turns into a scramble for the bedroom. A dress designed for the job avoids it with a few deliberate choices: real sleeves, a neckline that stays where it should, pockets, and a length that copes with stairs and floors.

The details that make it presentable

Six details separate a house dress from something you would only sleep in:

  • Sleeves. Elbow or three-quarter sleeves stay out of the washing-up and still look dressed. Full sleeves with a cuff you can push up suit anyone who wants covered arms when guests arrive.
  • A neckline that stays put. A round neck, a modest V or a short button placket does not slip off the shoulder or gape when you bend. A placket also makes the dress quicker to pull on.
  • Pockets. In-seam side pockets hold a phone and keys without spoiling the line. Our guide to adding pockets compares the options.
  • Length. Calf length is the easiest for stairs and housework. Full length is warmer and more covered, but it should clear the floor slightly in the slippers you wear indoors.
  • Opacity. A fabric dense enough, or lined where needed, that a bright window behind you is not a worry.
  • Room to move. A straight, A-line or gently gathered shape with space through the hips, so you can kneel, sit on the floor or lift a basket without strain.

Fabrics that wash and wear

Cotton is the usual choice because it breathes and stands up to frequent washing. Cambric is a dependable all-rounder, a little denser than lawn and so less sheer. Lawn is cooler for hot weather, though pale colours may need a lining. Viscose feels cool and drapes beautifully but needs gentler washing; our article on viscose and rayon explains its quirks. For a cold house in winter, a light khaddar or a brushed cotton is cosier.

Mid-tone colours and small prints hide everyday marks better than white or pale plains, and they look tidy for longer between washes.

Shapes worth considering

Most house dresses are one of a handful of simple shapes, each with a small trade-off.

  • A button-front shirt dress. Easy on and off, with a collar that looks neat at the door. Our button-front shirt dress is long and relaxed, with a pointed collar, roll-up sleeves held with a tab and side slits, and it is available in standard sizes or made to measure.
  • A kaftan-shaped dress. Wide cut-on sleeves and a straight body; very cool, though wide sleeves get in the way when cooking. For the kameez version worn out with trousers, see our kaftan-style kameez guide.
  • A yoke dress. A neat yoke across the shoulders with gathers below gives room everywhere else and looks tidy from the front.
  • A long A-line dress. Simple panels widening to the hem, with no gathers to crease, so it is the easiest to iron.

Having one made to measure

A house dress makes a good single-piece order, because the details that matter, such as sleeve length, pocket height and a hem that clears the floor in your slippers, are personal. Dresses are among the Western pieces we make through custom stitching. Ask for a quote with a photo of a shape you like, your measurements and the fabric you want, and we confirm the fabric and details in writing before cutting. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, with shipping time on top.

Common questions

What is the difference between a house dress and a nightdress?

A nightdress is made for sleeping and is often thin, sleeveless or low at the neck. A house dress is made for daytime at home: more opaque, with sleeves, a steady neckline and usually pockets, so you look presentable if someone calls.

What length is most practical for a house dress?

Calf length is the easiest for stairs, floors and housework. If you prefer full length, have it end just clear of the floor in the shoes or slippers you wear at home.

Can a house dress be worn outside?

A well-made one in a plain or small print can go out for errands with a cardigan or light jacket. The difference from a day dress is mostly the fabric and the finish.
