Pinafore dresses: what to wear under one, and ordering it
What to wear under a pinafore dress: collared shirts, fine long-sleeved tops and trousers, plus the armhole depth, ease and length to ask for when ordering one.
InspirationThe answer: a top with sleeves, and sometimes trousers
Under a pinafore dress, wear a collared shirt, a fine long-sleeved top or a thin roll-neck jumper, and add tights, leggings or slim trousers if you want the legs covered too. A pinafore is a sleeveless over-dress with a wider neckline and deeper armholes than an ordinary sleeveless dress, because it is designed to have something worn beneath it.
In British English a pinafore is this layering dress; in the USA the same garment is often called a jumper dress. Either way, think of it as a top layer that frames whatever is underneath.
Tops that sit well underneath
The easiest partners are close to the body, so the pinafore lies flat over them. Bulky sleeves and thick knits push the armholes open and make the dress stand away from you.
- A crisp shirt. Let the collar sit over a square or scoop neckline. White, pale blue or a fine stripe looks smart for work.
- A fine long-sleeved T-shirt or base layer. The easiest everyday option, in a colour that picks up something in the dress.
- A thin roll neck or polo neck. Warm in winter, and gives full cover at the throat.
- A blouse with a little volume at the cuff. Fine if the fullness starts below the elbow, where it clears the armhole.
- Below the hem: opaque tights, leggings or straight trousers for a longer, covered line.
A modest pinafore outfit
Because every layer is separate, a pinafore makes full coverage simple: a high-necked long-sleeved top, a midi or maxi pinafore over it, and slim trousers below. Nothing is see-through, nothing needs pinning, and the outfit looks deliberate rather than layered for the sake of it. Our guide to modest dressing with sleeves, necklines and lengths explains how those three choices balance each other.
If you prefer to wear a pinafore over a kurta, choose a short, slim kurta and a pinafore cut wide enough to sit over it without dragging.
What to ask for when one is made for you
A pinafore is one of the Western pieces you can send us a photo of and ask for. A few details make the difference between a dress that layers well and one that only works on its own.
Send a photo or a sketch with these notes through Send Your Design. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote, and nothing is cut until you have approved it. You can start straight from the design quote form.
- Armhole depth. Ask for it deeper than a standard sleeveless armhole, so a sleeve fits through without bunching. Say what you will wear underneath.
- Ease over the bust and chest. Take your bust measurement over the top you plan to wear, or tell us to allow for a layer. Our note on ease for dresses and trousers explains how much room different shapes need.
- Neckline. A square neck or a wide scoop frames a shirt collar; a higher round neck suits a roll neck.
- Length. Knee, midi or ankle. Measure it with the shoes you will wear.
- Opening. A side zip, back buttons or a wide enough neck to pull it over the head.
- Fabric with some body, such as a heavier cotton or linen, so the shape holds over another layer.
- Pockets, if you want them, in the side seams.
Common questions
Can a pinafore be worn without anything underneath?
Some can, in warm weather, but most are cut with deep armholes and a wide neck that show a lot of skin or underwear at the sides. If you want one that works alone too, ask for higher armholes, which then limits what fits under it.
Should I measure over the top I will wear under it?
Yes, for the bust and chest. A layer adds a little bulk, and measuring over it makes sure the pinafore closes comfortably and sits flat.
What length of pinafore is most versatile?
A midi length, just below the knee to mid-calf, works with tights, trousers and boots alike. A maxi pinafore gives the most cover but suits fewer shoes.
