Pakistani outfits for Northeast winters: snow and layers

How to wear Pakistani outfits through Northeast winters: warm fabrics, kameez cuts that sit under a coat, trousers for boots, shawls, and dealing with heated rooms.

Cold outside, hot inside

Pakistani outfits for Northeast winters have to cope with two climates at once: freezing streets, snow and slush outside, and dry, overheated apartments, offices and halls inside. The answer is a medium-weight fabric such as khaddar, karandi or marina, a kameez cut to sit neatly under a coat, trousers that work with boots, and a warm shawl in place of a sheer dupatta.

Whether you are in New York, Boston, Buffalo or Hartford, the same few decisions at the stitching stage make winter dressing much easier.

Winter fabrics to ask for

Pakistani winter collections are built around a handful of fabrics, each with a different feel:

  • [Khaddar](/fabrics/khaddar): a thick, slightly coarse cotton that is warm and hard-wearing. Good for everyday winter suits.
  • [Karandi](/fabrics/karandi): a textured, crisp weave that drapes nicely and looks smart. A popular choice for winter gatherings.
  • [Marina](/fabrics/marina): soft and warm with a brushed feel, comfortable for long days indoors.
  • [Velvet](/fabrics/velvet): rich and warm, mostly for shawls, dupattas or formal winter kameez.
  • Linen and heavier cottons: fine for heated offices, paired with a coat outside.

Cut it to sit under a coat

A winter kameez spends half its life under outerwear, so tell us what you wear over it. Wide bell sleeves bunch inside a coat sleeve; a straight full or three-quarter sleeve slides in easily. A kameez that ends a little above the hem of your long coat looks tidy, while one that hangs below it gets wet and dirty.

If you like a layer underneath on the coldest days, mention it, so the body and sleeves have room for a thin thermal without pulling. Our guide to ease explains how a little extra room changes the fit.

Necklines matter too. A high round neck or a band collar sits comfortably under a scarf, while a deep neckline leaves a cold gap at the throat; if you love an open neckline, pair it with a scarf you can take off indoors. Our neckline styles show the main shapes.

Trousers for snow, slush and salt

Wide hems and winter streets are not friends. A floor-skimming palazzo picks up slush and road salt, which leaves white tide marks on dark fabric. For daily wear, slimmer straight trousers or cigarette pants tuck into boots or sit neatly over them. A classic shalwar with a cuffed hem also works, as long as the cuff fits over your ankle boot.

Keep the floaty trousers for indoor occasions, and if you want both, ask for two trouser styles in your quote.

Shawls instead of chiffon dupattas

A chiffon dupatta does nothing against a February wind. Many people swap it for a wool or pashmina-style shawl in winter, worn over the coat or around the shoulders indoors. If you are ordering a suit with Fabric + Stitching, you can ask for a warmer dupatta fabric in the quote. Our earlier piece on winter fabrics compares the options, and autumn layering covers cardigans and coats.

Heated rooms, static and dry air

Central heating dries the air, and synthetic linings cling and crackle in it. A cotton lining under a winter kameez is more comfortable and hangs better. Choose natural fibres for the layer touching your skin where you can, and keep a lighter cambric or lawn kurta for heated offices where a khaddar suit would be too warm by lunchtime.

To order, our Fabric + Stitching page for the USA explains how we supply winter fabric, or you can request a quote and tell us which city you are dressing for.

Common questions

Is a velvet suit practical for a New York winter?

Velvet is warm and looks rich, but it is heavier and needs more care than khaddar or karandi. Many people keep it for a shawl or a formal winter kameez and wear cotton-based winter fabrics day to day.

Which fabric is warmest for a winter shalwar kameez?

Khaddar, karandi and marina are the usual winter fabrics, and velvet is used for formal pieces and shawls. Khaddar is the most hard-wearing for everyday use, while marina feels the softest.

What trousers work best with snow boots?

Straight trousers or cigarette pants are the easiest because they tuck into boots or sit neatly over them. Wide palazzos tend to pick up slush and road salt, so they are better kept for indoor events.

Can I wear a thermal layer under a made-to-measure kameez?

Yes, if you mention it when you order. A little extra ease in the body and sleeves lets a thin thermal sit underneath without pulling.
