Eid moves through the seasons

The Islamic calendar is shorter than the solar year, so both Eids arrive about eleven days earlier each year. An Eid that falls in the mild months one year will drift towards the heat in later years. Check where the date lands before you choose fabric, rather than buying for “Eid” in general.

• Warm or hot Eid: lawn, cotton net details and fine cambric for the day; keep heavier work for the evening outfit.
• Mild Eid: cotton silk, lighter jacquard or a lined chiffon work well from morning to night.
• Cool evenings in winter: marina or karandi hold their shape and feel warm enough for an outdoor dinner.

Shapes that work for prayers and visiting

Eid morning usually starts with prayer, so many women prefer full or three-quarter sleeves, a neckline that sits comfortably with a scarf, and trousers that let you sit and kneel easily. A shalwar, a straight trouser or a sharara all work, and the sharara adds a festive feel without extra embroidery. For visiting, a calf-length or longer kameez looks elegant and suits sitting on floor cushions as well as at a table.

If you wear an abaya on Eid morning and take it off at a relative’s home, plan the outfit to look complete on its own, with the dupatta and sleeves doing the decorative work.

How much embellishment?

Our fancy work for the UAE is added to an outfit we are stitching, at three levels on the quote form. Delicate work sits at the neckline or sleeves and keeps the outfit wearable long after Eid. Detailed work covers the neckline, sleeves and hem. Statement work is bolder, for Eid evenings and parties. Lace and borders are options too. Exactly what is possible depends on the fabric and design, and your written quote confirms it, so send a reference photo of the kind of work you like rather than assuming any particular technique.

Ordering for sisters, mothers and friends

Matching or coordinated outfits are a lovely Eid tradition. Each person needs her own measurements, but the outfits can be quoted together on one request. When to order

Work backwards from Eid. We make each outfit in 5 to 7 working days, counted from when you approve the quote and pay in full. Courier time to the UAE comes on top, and before that there is the quote itself and any questions about the design. If you send your own fabric with Stitching Only, add the time it takes to reach us in Pakistan, because the making days start when it arrives. We do not take rush orders, so earlier is always easier; our Eid timeline sets out the steps.
