Pakistani wedding guest outfits for UK weddings
What to wear as a guest at a Pakistani wedding in the UK: baraat and walima dress codes, fabrics for banqueting halls, cold evenings and how far ahead to order.
InspirationWhat a UK Pakistani wedding asks of a guest
A Pakistani wedding guest outfit in the UK has to look formal under bright banqueting-hall lights, stay comfortable through a long evening of sitting, eating and greeting, and cope with a cold car park at the end of the night. In practice that means a dressy fabric with some structure, sleeves and a neckline you are comfortable in for hours, and a plan for a coat or shawl. Order it early, because wedding seasons and Eid can crowd the same months.
The mehndi has its own colourful rules, so this guide covers the baraat and walima, the more formal days.
Reading the dress code
Few invitations spell it out, but the unwritten code is fairly consistent. The baraat is usually the most formal event: rich colours, fuller embroidery and heavier fabrics. The walima often feels a little softer, with pastels, jewel tones or elegant neutrals and more restrained work. Close family tend to dress up further than friends and colleagues.
If in doubt, ask someone on the host’s side what the family is planning. It is easier to adjust a design brief than to feel underdressed in a hall full of colour.
Fabrics for warm halls and cold evenings
UK venues are often heated well, while the journey there can be bitter, so think about both.
- Chiffon or georgette with a lining: light, floaty and formal; see georgette vs chiffon.
- Cotton silk and raw silk: a gentle sheen that photographs well and holds embroidery.
- Organza: lovely for dupattas, sleeves and overlays; our organza guide shows where it works.
- [Velvet](/fabrics/velvet): a winter favourite as a shawl or a statement piece for cold-season weddings.
Cuts for a long day
A wedding means hours of sitting at round tables, queuing for food and perhaps dancing. A flared or kalidar kameez moves well and looks graceful when you stand; a straight cut is easier under a coat. Trousers matter too: a sharara or gharara feels special, while straight trousers are practical if you are driving or travelling by train.
Choose sleeves you will not tug at all evening, and a neckline that sits well with the jewellery you plan to wear. If your dupatta is heavily worked, ask for it to be finished so it stays put on the shoulder.
Think about your coat as part of the plan. A long wool coat over a floor-length frock can crush the skirt and catch on embroidery, so many guests arrive in a shawl or a cape-style wrap instead and leave the coat in the car. If you must wear a coat, a kameez that ends at or just below the knee travels far better.
How much embroidery?
Embroidery can be added to an outfit we are stitching at three levels: delicate (neckline or sleeves), detailed (neckline, sleeves and hem) and statement, for bolder Eid and party looks. Statement work is a good fit for a baraat as a guest. What is possible depends on your fabric and design, and it is confirmed in your written quote; the UK fancy work page explains more.
Timing and ordering several outfits
Weddings in Birmingham, Bradford and across the country often stretch over a weekend, so you may want two or three outfits. List them in one enquiry and each is quoted separately within it. Production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, with shipping to the UK on top, so start as soon as the date is fixed.
If you have a picture of the look you want, use Send Your Design and start a design quote. The UK page covers delivery and the quote in pounds.
Common questions
What should I wear to a Pakistani wedding in the UK as a guest?
For the baraat, a formal suit in rich colours with fuller embroidery; for the walima, something a little softer in pastels, jewel tones or neutrals. Choose a fabric with some structure, comfortable sleeves and a warm layer for the journey.
Which fabrics suit a winter wedding in the UK?
Lined chiffon or georgette, cotton silk and raw silk all suit a heated hall, with a velvet or wool shawl for the journey. Velvet itself works well as a statement piece when the wedding falls in the colder months.
Can I order outfits for several wedding events at once?
Yes. Put every outfit in one enquiry with its design and measurements, and the written quote covers each one. Starting early helps, because production and shipping both take time.
Is a dress suitable for a Pakistani wedding as a guest?
Often, yes, especially at the walima or for friends and colleagues of the couple. A floor-length or midi dress in a dressy fabric with sleeves you are comfortable in fits in well. Ask the hosts if you are unsure about the family’s expectations.
