Fancy work and embellishment in the UK

Fancy work is our name for embellishment on an outfit we are stitching for you: embroidery, lace and borders, at the level you choose. For UK customers it is mostly about matching the work to the occasion and the season, from a touch at the neckline for the office to a bolder finish for Eid or a friend’s wedding. It is always part of an outfit we make; we do not embroider garments on their own.

Which level for which occasion

Delicate work at the neckline or sleeves suits a kurta for work or campus, where a little detail goes a long way under a coat. Detailed work across the neckline, sleeves and hem fits a dawat, a family dinner or a Diwali party. Statement work, bolder and fuller, is for Eid morning, a mehndi or a wedding where you are a guest. If you are unsure, ask us to advise on the form and tell us where you will wear it.

Embroidery in a British winter

Embroidery sits differently on heavier fabrics. On khaddar, karandi or velvet a detailed border reads richly from across a room, while on lawn a lighter touch keeps the fabric soft. If your Eid falls in the colder months, consider placing the work at the neckline and hem, where it shows above and below a coat or shawl. An embroidered front panel down a long kameez is another way to keep the work visible indoors.

Lace and borders from your own suit

Many brand packs and boutique suits sold in the UK come with lace, an embroidered neckline or a border to be attached. With Stitching Only, we place those pieces as part of stitching your outfit, and where each one goes is agreed in writing before cutting. Our style page on a lace hem shows one familiar placement, and neckline lace another.

How it works

Fancy work step by step

  1. 01

    Choose the level

On the quote form, pick delicate (neckline or sleeves), detailed (neckline, sleeves and hem), statement (bolder work for Eid and parties), or ask us to advise.

  2. 02

    Show us the look

Add a reference photo of the embroidery, lace or border you like. What is possible on your fabric and design is confirmed in your written quote.

  3. 03

    Agreed before cutting

The placement and amount of embellishment are agreed in writing with the rest of the design, and quoted as part of the outfit.

  4. 04

    Made with the outfit

The work is done in Pakistan as part of stitching your outfit, which is then shipped to you. We do not embroider garments on their own.
