Petite shalwar kameez in the US: lengths that fit

Petite shalwar kameez that fit, ordered from the US: why pret lengths swamp shorter frames, which lengths to measure in inches, and proportions that work.

The length problem

Petite shalwar kameez almost always need a custom length. Pakistani pret is usually cut to one kameez length per size, sleeves to match, and trousers for an average height, so on a shorter frame the kameez lands too low, the sleeves cover the hands and the trouser hem bunches. Made to measure fixes all three at the source, because every length is taken from your body.

In US shops, petite ranges are usually aimed at women of about five foot four and under, and they shorten everything in proportion. Pakistani brands rarely do that, which is why so many petite women end up shortening ready-made suits, and losing an embroidered border in the process.

Measure lengths, not just widths

The width measurements are the same for everyone. For a petite fit, the length measurements do most of the work:

  • Kameez length, from the high point of the shoulder to where you want the hem. Stand in the shoes you will wear.
  • Shoulder to waist, so darts and any waist shaping sit in the right place.
  • Sleeve length, with the arm slightly bent, to where you want the sleeve to stop.
  • Rise, from waist to seat, which is often shorter on a petite frame.
  • Trouser length, from waist to where you want the hem, with your shoes on.

Choosing a kameez length

There is no single right length. Knee or just above is easy to wear with straight trousers, hip length suits jeans and cigarette pants, and a long kameez can still work if it is cut slim and paired with a wide palazzo. Our guide to kameez length for your height shows how lengths compare.

Whichever you choose, ask for the length you want rather than relying on the length of the fabric. With an unstitched suit, the border can then be placed at your hem instead of being cut away; see shortening a kameez without losing the border for why this matters.

Proportions that help

A straight kameez with a neat neckline keeps the line clean, and three-quarter sleeves show a little wrist, which stops the outfit swamping you. Keep heavy borders a sensible depth for your height; a very deep border can cut a petite frame in half. Matching the trouser colour to the kameez also lengthens the line.

Large-scale prints can look striking on a petite frame if the cut is simple. For more on shape, see A-line vs straight kameez.

Dupattas and wide trousers

A full-length dupatta can trail on a petite frame. Ask for it to be finished a little shorter, or drape it over one shoulder rather than both. Ghararas and shararas are not off-limits; the flare can start lower, and the length is cut to your shoes.

The same goes for palazzos. A wide leg cut to the exact length, just skimming the shoe, looks far more elegant on a petite frame than one that pools on the floor.

Ordering from the US

Measure in inches if that is what you have; the quote form accepts both inches and centimetres. If you already own the suit, send photos through the Stitching Only quote form and we confirm what to post. Our stitching page for the USA explains the process, and the USA page covers delivery, with import charges included in your quote. Customers in places such as San Jose and Chicago order exactly the same way.

Common questions

Can a petite woman wear a gharara?

Yes. The flare can start a little lower and the length is cut to your shoes, so the trousers do not trail. Keeping the kameez shorter above a gharara also helps the proportions.

What kameez length suits a petite woman?

Knee length or just above works well with straight trousers, and hip length suits jeans. A long kameez can work too if it is cut slim. The right length is the one you choose, measured from your shoulder.

Can you keep the border if my kameez needs to be shorter?

When we stitch from an unstitched suit, the length is cut to your measurement and the border can be placed at your hem, so it is not lost. We confirm this in your quote.

Do I measure with shoes on?

For kameez and trouser lengths, yes. Wear the shoes you expect to wear with the outfit, so the hems land where you want them.
