Eid outfits in the USA: from prayer to evening dawat
Eid outfits in the USA have to handle early prayers, a working day and an evening gathering. How to plan one Pakistani outfit for all three, in any season.
InspirationEid in America rarely gets a day off
Eid outfits in the USA have to cope with a very American kind of Eid: early prayers in a mosque, a hired hall or a park, then work or school for many people, then a dawat at someone’s home in the evening. One Pakistani outfit has to look festive, sit comfortably on a prayer mat, survive a commute and still feel special at dinner. That is very achievable if you plan the fabric, cut and embellishment with the whole day in mind.
This guide covers the US side of Eid dressing. For a general timeline from fabric to finished outfit, see planning your Eid outfit.
One outfit, three settings
Think through the day and ask for the details that make each part easy:
- Prayer: a modest neckline, comfortable sleeves and trousers you can sit and kneel in. A straight trouser or a classic shalwar is easier than a slim cigarette pant for sitting on the floor.
- Work or school: a mid-length kameez with side slits looks smart with a blazer or cardigan, and a dupatta can be folded into a bag once prayers are over.
- The evening: this is where embroidery, a richer dupatta or a statement sleeve earn their place. A wide palazzo or sharara changes the mood if you have time to swap trousers before dinner.
Eid moves through the American seasons
Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, Eid comes around eleven days earlier each year. For the next few years Eid ul-Fitr falls in late winter or early spring and Eid ul-Adha in spring, which across the US can mean anything from a snowy morning in Minneapolis to a warm, humid day in Houston.
So choose fabric for your city, not for the photographs in a lawn catalogue. In the cold North and Midwest, karandi, khaddar or a cotton silk hold their shape under a coat; our embroidered karandi suit is one example of a winter Eid look. In Texas, Florida or Southern California, lawn or cambric with a chiffon dupatta stays comfortable through a long day.
How much embellishment?
Embroidery, lace and borders can be added to any outfit we stitch, at three levels: delicate (neckline or sleeves), detailed (neckline, sleeves and hem) or statement (bolder work for Eid and parties). For a day that includes an office, delicate or detailed work is often the sweet spot; statement work suits an outfit kept for the evening.
What is possible depends on the fabric and the design, so describe what you have in mind and we confirm it in your quote. Our fancy work page for the USA explains the options.
Ordering early from the US
Production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping to the US is on top of that and varies. If you are posting your own unstitched suit, there is also the journey from the US to Pakistan. Eid is also the busiest time of year for anyone who stitches Pakistani clothes, so the earlier you send your enquiry, the calmer it will be.
Put the Eid date on the form and say it is fixed. We do not take rush orders, and we would rather tell you honestly at the quote stage if a date looks tight.
Matching outfits and getting a quote
Many families in the US coordinate colours for Eid photos. If you and your sisters or friends want a shared palette with different cuts, see coordinated outfits for sisters and friends, then list everyone’s pieces in one enquiry.
If you have a picture of the look you want, start with Send Your Design. The Eid occasion page and our USA page have more ideas and the ordering details.
Common questions
What should I wear for Eid if I have to work afterwards?
A mid-length kameez with straight trousers, a modest neckline and delicate or detailed embroidery works well. It looks festive at prayers, smart with a blazer at work, and you can add a fuller dupatta for the evening.
When should I order an Eid outfit from the US?
As early as you can. Production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, shipping to the US is extra and varies, and posting your own fabric adds another journey. Put the Eid date on the form so it is considered in your quote.
Can you add heavy embroidery for Eid?
We offer statement embellishment for Eid and parties on outfits we stitch. What is possible depends on your fabric and design and is confirmed in your written quote.
