Tell us where the outfit will be worn and the right changes follow. A kurta with a band collar and wide-leg trousers looks at home in a Milan office when made in linen or cambric. A long, calf-length kameez with embroidery suits a winter dinner or a night at the opera in Parma. A lighter, flared shape in lawn suits gatherings in the south. Changes for the north

For Turin, Bergamo or the Veneto, add a lining, choose full sleeves and lengthen the kameez so it sits well under a winter coat. Straight or cigarette trousers sit better over boots than a full shalwar. Made in khaddar or karandi instead of lawn, the same design carries you through the coldest months.

Changes for the south and the summer

For Rome, Naples or Palermo, shorten the sleeves to elbow or three-quarter length, swap straight trousers for palazzo or a shalwar, and leave the lining out unless the fabric is sheer. You can turn a three-piece into a two-piece by leaving out the dupatta, or add a waistcoat for a cooler evening.
