From late May into September, the heat here settles in for weeks at a time. Fine lawn and voile are the coolest choices, and an easier cut through the bust and hips stops the kameez clinging when the air is thick. Ask for unlined sleeves, and a cotton lining only where a pale print would show through, because synthetic linings hold the heat. Short, mild winters rarely need more than cambric with full sleeves, or a shawl over a lawn suit on a cool evening.

Which fabric copes with a Columbia summer?
Lawn is the lightest, with voile and fine cotton close behind. Linen is pleasant on a dry day but creases quickly, and heavier weaves such as khaddar are best kept for the few genuinely cold weeks.
