The Gilded Seam: Custom Women’s Stitching

Delivered to Belgium

Custom Clothing Delivered to Belgium

Whether you live in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent or Liège, The Gilded Seam makes women’s clothing to your own measurements in Pakistan and ships it to your address in Belgium. There is no shop, studio or measuring service anywhere in the country: you order online, agree every detail in writing, and choose whether we supply the fabric or you send your own. This page covers what is different about ordering from Belgium, from a country that works in French and Dutch to Belgian customs, EU import charges and the numbers on Belgian size labels.

Quick answers

Ordering from Belgium

The questions customers ask before their first order, answered for your country.

What can I order?

Made-to-measure women’s clothing, cut and stitched to your own measurements. That covers three-piece and two-piece shalwar kameez, kurtas and kameez, co-ords, Eid outfits, casual party wear and Western pieces such as dresses, skirts, tops and trousers. In Belgium that might be a plain kurta and straight trousers for an office near Schuman, a lined kameez for a grey Antwerp winter, or something dressier for an evening reception in Brussels.

Can I order just one suit?

Yes. Our minimum order is one suit, made to your agreed measurements and design. There are no free samples, so the fabric, cut and finishing are settled through your photos, notes and written quote before anything is made. One suit for Eid, delivered to a single address in Ghent or Namur, is a perfectly normal order.

Can you provide the fabric?

Yes. With Fabric + Stitching, we supply the agreed fabric and make the outfit for you. Describe the colour, weight and occasion, perhaps a mid-weight cotton for Belgium’s damp months or a lawn for the warmer weeks, and the fabric is confirmed in your quote. Nothing then has to be posted from Belgium: the only parcel is your finished outfit.

Can I send my own fabric?

Yes, subject to fabric suitability and sufficient quantity. This is our Stitching Only service, and sending your fabric from Belgium to Pakistan and receiving the finished garment are two separate shipping stages. Please contact us to confirm the fabric, the quantity and the arrangements before you send anything, then post it by a tracked international service with an accurate customs declaration.

How do I submit my measurements?

Enter them on the quote form, in centimetres or inches. Centimetres are the natural choice in Belgium, though inches are accepted too; just tell us which you used. A number from a Belgian label, such as a 38, cannot replace measurements, because it tells us nothing about your sleeve length or where a kameez should fall.

How are the design and fit agreed?

In writing, before any cutting starts. We confirm the design details and your measurements with you in writing, and nothing is cut until you have agreed them. Nobody measures you or sees the outfit on you in Belgium, so photos of a kameez that already fits you well, and notes on where you will wear it, from a meeting room to a family dinner, are genuinely useful.

Where is the clothing made?

Our garments are made in Pakistan and shipped internationally. We have no shop, studio or workroom in Brussels or anywhere else in Belgium; everything is arranged online, and your finished outfit is shipped to your address.

How are production time and shipping costs confirmed?

Both are confirmed in your written quote. Production time and the cost of shipping to Belgium depend on the garments, the service option and the delivery method, so we set them out for your order rather than publishing a standard figure. If you need an outfit for Eid or a particular event, give us the date when you ask for a quote.

Who handles import charges?

We do. Your written quote includes delivery to your address in Belgium and any import duties, taxes and customs fees, so there is nothing extra to pay when your parcel arrives. Parcels from outside the EU clear Belgian customs (Douane et Accises, or Douane en Accijnzen), where VAT, called TVA in French and btw in Dutch, applies to all imported goods and a new temporary flat EU customs duty applies to low-value parcels, and both are covered in your quote.

How do I request a quote?

Use the Request a Custom Quote form at /quote?country=belgium, which opens with Belgium already selected. Add your city, the garment, the quantity, Fabric + Stitching or Stitching Only, your measurements, design images and notes, and we reply with a written quote. Your full delivery address is only needed once the order goes ahead.

Two ways to order

Our fabric, or yours

Both are made to your measurements. The minimum order is one suit, and we don’t offer free samples.

  • Fabric + Stitching

We supply the agreed fabric and make your outfit to your measurements. One parcel: the finished outfit shipped to you.

    • Fabric agreed with you before cutting
    • Minimum order one suit
    • No need to send anything
  • Stitching Only

You supply suitable fabric, such as an unstitched suit, and we cut, stitch and finish it.

    • Two shipping stages: your fabric to us in Pakistan, then the outfit to you
    • Confirm suitability and quantity before sending
    • Minimum order one suit

Stitching Only from Belgium: sending fabric to Pakistan

If you already have fabric, our unstitched suit stitching service turns it into a finished outfit cut to your measurements. It might be an unstitched three-piece that came home in a suitcase from Pakistan, a lawn set ordered online, or cotton bought by the metre from the fabric shops along Rue de Brabant (Brabantstraat), near Brussels-North station.

Contact us before you post anything. Send daylight photos of every piece, as our guide to photographing fabric for a quote shows, so we can confirm the fabric suits your design and that there is enough of it; how much fabric a three-piece suit needs gives you a rough idea first. Once the arrangements are agreed, send the parcel to Pakistan by a tracked international service and describe the contents accurately on the customs declaration, for example “unstitched cotton suit fabric, three pieces”, with an honest value. How to post your fabric for stitching covers the packing.

That is the first of two shipping stages. Your finished outfit travels to you in Belgium as a separate international shipment, and that is the parcel that goes through Belgian customs; its delivery and import charges are already included in your quote. If you would rather not post anything, choose Fabric + Stitching and we supply the fabric.

Delivery to Belgium: TVA or btw, customs duty and courier fees

Your outfit is shipped from Pakistan to your address in Belgium, and production time, the delivery method and its cost are set out in your written quote before you approve anything. Because the parcel comes from outside the EU, it is cleared by Belgian customs: the Customs and Excise administration of the FPS Finance, known in French as Douane et Accises and in Dutch as Douane en Accijnzen.

The European Commission explains that since 1 July 2021 all goods imported into the EU are subject to VAT, which in Belgium is TVA in French and btw in Dutch; it is paid either through the seller’s registration in the EU’s Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) or when the parcel is imported. From 1 July 2026 the EU also applies a temporary €3 customs duty for each category of goods on low-value consignments worth up to €150 from outside the EU, until 1 July 2028, and the previous €150 duty exemption has been abolished, as the Council of the EU confirmed. The courier that clears the parcel may add a handling fee of its own.

That is what applies to any parcel from outside the EU, and with us it is already included: your quote covers delivery to your address plus any TVA or btw, customs duty and courier handling fees, so there is nothing extra to pay when your parcel arrives. If a courier ever asks you for payment on delivery, contact us before paying anything. The Europe overview and our guide to ordering from Europe cover the same rules across the EU.

French, Dutch and the sizes on Belgian labels

Belgium runs on two main languages, Dutch in Flanders and French in Wallonia, with Brussels officially bilingual and German spoken in a small area in the east, so people look for this kind of service in both. In French, made to measure is sur mesure, a dressmaker is a couturière, and a kurta is often sold as a tunique; in Dutch, it is kleding op maat, made by a naaister or a kleermaker. The outfit itself is still a shalwar kameez, or salwar kameez, whichever spelling you grew up with: a kameez, trousers and usually a dupatta.

Belgian shops usually label women’s clothes on the French numbering, so a 38 in Brussels can be a size away from a 38 in a Dutch or German shop just over the border, and neither is a UK size. That is why we never work from a label. Measure yourself in centimetres with the size guide and our measuring guide; if your tape is in inches, that works too. Our comparison of UK, EU and US dress sizes explains why labels mislead.

From the European Quarter to the Ardennes

Ordering works the same way anywhere in Belgium. Our Brussels guide covers office wear for the European Quarter and dressing for evening receptions, Antwerp and Ghent have guides of their own, and the same process applies in Liège, Leuven or Charleroi.

The Belgian climate is mild, grey and often wet, with summers that are warm rather than hot and damp winters that turn colder and snowier in the Ardennes. Mid-weight cambric, linen and cotton blends cover most of the year, a lined kameez or a khaddar suit helps through the winter months, and lawn is for the warmer weeks. Our winter fabrics guide compares the warmer options.

For Eid, start early and tell us your date, particularly with Stitching Only, where your fabric travels to Pakistan before the finished outfit travels to you; the Eid outfit timeline helps you plan. Neighbouring France and the Netherlands have their own pages, and when you are ready you can request a quote for Belgium.

FAQ

More questions from Belgium

Measuring guide: how to measure. The whole process: how ordering works.

Do you have a shop or studio in Brussels?

No. We have no shop, studio or measuring service in Brussels, Antwerp or anywhere else in Belgium. Everything is ordered online, made in Pakistan to the measurements you send, and delivered to your address.

Can I just give you my Belgian size?

Please send measurements instead. Belgian labels usually follow the French numbering, Dutch and German shops use another, and brands vary within each, so a size cannot tell us your sleeve length or where a kameez should fall. Measure in centimetres using the size guide and enter the numbers on the quote form.

Will I have to pay anything when my outfit reaches Belgium?

No. Your written quote includes delivery and any import VAT (TVA or btw), EU customs duty and courier handling fees, so there is nothing extra to pay when your parcel arrives. If a courier ever asks you for payment on delivery, contact us before paying anything.
